It's going to soon be the Third Decade of the 21st Century, how really 'with it' are you?

I’m not with it nor do I want to be I listen to the music of the 60s 70s and 80s as well as classical and Christian music. I have absolutely no idea nor do I care what the names of the groups are nowadays and I’m not interested in the television shows or movies of today, most of them are trash. Foul language, hyper violent, I could go on and on. Oh yeah this is also what my grandparents said about our generation! And the beat goes on!

I gleefully ignore pop culture and new TV shows; I stopped listening to country music in the '80s because it was becoming un-country; am gladly clueless about Twitter and the rest of social media.

It's kinda sad that whenever I go anywhere, everybody looks so young; my doctor is my nephew's age. And I've had several friends who died, although they were mostly quite a bit older than me.

I've posed this question to my peers and nobody seems to know the answer: Why do young people talk so (too) fast? Where did they learn to do this? I mostly can't understand them; do they really understand each other? When I was young we used a lot of new words that my parents were not familiar with, but nobody ever said that we were talking too fast.

An interesting twist to all this: I bought my first computer in 1992. I learned DOS commands out of necessity. I learned HTML coding (websites) in the '90s just for the challenge, and I learned a fair amount about computers in general. And the funny thing is, I've run into people much younger than me in the past 10-15 years online, who know less about all that than I do.

It's old technology but a lot of that stuff is still done, but it's done automatically behind the scenes by computers/programs themselves. So it's still relevant, but not something the average computer user needs to know today. Ah, youthful vigor! I sure had it, but boy is it gone. I still like to read a lot, but learning (or doing) new things? -- nah, I'm too mentally tired.

(I had to google "tray computer" and finally learned that the tray is that strip across the bottom of the screen with some frequently used icons, the clock, etc. So now I know.)
Unless it's an Apple computer, Sunny. Then it's called the "dock." I can't keep up anymore. o_O

I suppose as far as being "with it," I've lost all interest in keeping up with the latest and greatest. I haven't liked popular music for the most part since the early '90s. As far as slang, I get annoyed by normal words, hand gestures, etc. being misappropriated by the latest hate group or idiot. I don't "tweet", use Instagram or even Facebook. I don't have a Youtube channel whining about my boring life and what I bought at the Dollar Store. I don't take selfies and am not desperate for attention. Get off my lawn.

I'm officially old, people.

Here's watching the Grammys at our house:

"Who's that?"

"I dunno. You ever heard of her?"

"Don't think so. Who's he?"
We don't even watch it for that reason...because we never know who anyone is.., and I'll tell you a little secret, I worked in the entertainment biz (TV and film) for 20 years and my o/h has worked there all his life and still does!! yet we barely know who anyone is these days.

Watching any award show now means, for me, skipping a headlined story the next day or switching off the "news".

If the yung uns talk too fast for me, I either ignore them or, if I need to understand them, tell them I have a hearing loss and they need to repeat what they just said more slowly so that I can understand. Both of my granddaughters talk too fast all the time.

That's because it's supposed to be a ''live show'' when in reality it's recorded the previous night, so the media gets hold of all the results before you get a chance to see it on TV...

I'm kind of eclectic; I prefer some things and ways of the past, and some of the present. I really like electronic music, for example, but was a big fan of pioneering groups of that genre like ELP back in the 70's. I don't care much about current fashion trends or 20-something celebrities, and wish that "gutter language" had stayed in the gutter rather than become acceptable in popular entertainment. I think that "Grandpa Simpson"had it right...

Love this, I had a flashback of the movie Gran Torino.

I really enjoy the language of today. I get a real kick out of figuring out what my grandkids or other young friends are saying on instagram or Facebook, Twitter or snap chat.

One of the young people I’m in touch with posted on my Instagram.

Took me a minute. Then I realized she was asking me to FaceTime her! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Not with it anymore, stopped at Dollar Store and clerks hair was dyed purple and she had a lip ring and even more puzzling she was an exceptionally attractive girl. Then there is Sweetie, as she aged she has the same traits as her mother, heaven help me..🙏

That would have flown over my head for sure.
What I do like is that I can talk on blue tooth in the car however I still pull over even though it is hands free and is transmitted through the car speakers.
That’s very handy. It’s handy for the gps too.

I like coloured hair on young people and a little bit on older people. Lately I’ve seen some very attractive older people with partially coloured hair.
It can be tastefully done.
Well I know I’ve posted pics of myself with turquoise and pink hair, so I guess it’s obvious I’m a fan! 😂

Know what you mean OD...'Why do young people talk so (too) fast? Where did they learn to do this? I mostly can't understand them; do they really understand each other? When I was young we used a lot of new words that my parents were not familiar with, but nobody ever said that we were talking too fast.'

My parents Always told me I talked too fast, to slow down, they can't understand me or dad kept saying 'what, what did you say' (selective hearing I thot back then)...but now I'm going thru the same thing with my grown kids...its a mind set of each generation to reassure themselves their still in their teens or 20's, imo, and keeping up with their young world of friends they have, when they're in their 30's and 40's, knowing they're getting older and telling themselves I'll never have those issues that mom and dad have, not me! hahha, little do they know it happens to all of us, right?

Rather than 'get off my lawn,' I don't even try to communicate with anyone under 50
Well
Rather than 'get off my lawn,' I don't even try to communicate with anyone under 50
I tend to do that as well I don’t get them they don’t get me and that’s just the way it is every once in a while I’ll say something to one of my kids and they look at me and say get with it Mom I’ve stopped giving advice the’re going to have to figure it out on their own.

Remember when we were teens, and there was family gathering. Remember how aghast you were when you found out the adults didn't know the Beatles names? Remember rolling your eyes, when they said things like, " Now, Lawrence Welk. That's good music". And none of them owned a transistor. And all the movie stars they talked about were dead. Well, it's going to soon be the Third Decade of the 21st Century, how really 'with it' are you? How tuned into the pop culture of today?
My wife's mother (98) watches MeTV (Oldies channel) and when I tell her about someone who died she says "I just saw him/her on TV"

I know none of the present music artists and when I look up info on movies made in the last ten years I recognize none of the actors. Ask some one who is thirty "who is Erroll Flynn?" In the home I grew up in we had a recreation room where we played our records. My parents never listened to any of my records and I never listened to any of theirs.
