I took the first major step in getting out of Austin, yesterday: I sold my drum set. It kind of hurt to see it go, just like it hurt, twenty-two years ago, when I sold all of my band equipment, after deciding to stop playing gigs. Now, after getting another band going last year, I'm getting out of the biz, again, since I'm leaving Austin, hopefully, next year.

It's now a matter of giving away, or selling, just about everything I have. I really don't want to move with much stuff.

How did you handle your last, major move? I've lived in my house for thirty-one years. I raised a family, here. There's so much stuff, here, that I feel almost overwhelmed.

Any advice from those of you who made a major move is greatly appreciated.

If you are planning on selling household goods tools from your business, etc... I would go with an auction where it all goes in one day.

You will lose on some things and make surprising amounts on other things so it all tends to balance out

Get the best auctioneer in your area even if his rates are steep, a good auctioneer can tease the cash out of the crowd and pay his own way.

I put it all in a container when we moved to the cabin.
After a year, whatever I didn't use, I got rid of...with the exception of my wife's cookbooks and yarn

Sooooo, the container remains half full
 
We aren't moving but this past summer I decided to really go through our home and get rid of anything we haven't used in the last couple of years.
I went room by room, made 4 piles. One was what I wanted to keep, one for selling, and one for charitable organizations and one for garbage. If an item didn't sell in a month or two it went to charity. I used the Lupus Foundation because we live in a rural area and they would pick up.

We moved my MIL down to Texas 5 years ago...We rented a 10 foot by 10 foot storage unit and filled it to the door with stuff she could not live without. I think I have raised the door twice in the past 5 years!!!!

Oh treeguy. Ouch 😦That must have been tough.
I know how much you love your musical instruments and playing gigs. You really are serious here. Unfortunately I haven’t moved , in about 25 years , so can’t really offer any great advice other than what you’ve got here but I wish you the best of luck wherever you go.

Plenty of boxes, I've always found that when I have more than enough things go better. I don't have any astounding advice but wish you much good luck and success with your move.
 
I've done many major moves in my lifetime, especially when my husband was active duty military. The challenge there was to keep the weight of our household goods down because the Army wouldn't pay for more than a set number of pounds. When we went overseas, the restrictions were even more stringent so we would put good furniture (with some exceptions) into storage and take just what we knew we were going to need and used GI furniture over there.

I HATE moving and hope to never have to do it again.
 
Last & final move was easy. Gave furniture & whatever else to two of my sons. Kept bed linens, table ware, pots & pans, pictures & glasses, some clothing, the rest to charity or trash pickup. Moved from cold north east to sunny south west.

Planning for early retirement bought & paid cash for a newly constructed 3 bedroom rancher which my 3rd. son lived in for 3 years until I retired. We moved in he moved out to his own place since he had saved enough money living rent free to be able to buy where he wanted to live. Planning, planning, planning & it worked out as we hoped it would.
 
I think I understand about you selling your music gear. I haven't gigged since 2010 and have no plans dragging all that gear out again. I guess I should start selling off some things but I can't bring myself to do it. This may sound nuts but I kind of love my music gear. Many a good time and memories there, like an old friend. Hard to say good-by.

When my boy passed away we had to go in and clear out the house he was renting. At the time my wife had been volunteering at a local hospice thrift store. The thrift store had a good sized moving truck so we made a deal with them. They could have all our boy's medical supplies (Hospital bed, wheel chair, etc ...) plus all the house furniture, tv, plates n' dishes, clothing, everything. Just bring your truck to the house and we'll load it up. Well they did and even brought some help. Everything else I took to the dump. (We did keep a few of his things.)

I hope when many of say went to trash I hope you gave whatever you could to recyclers?
For a couple decades now our piles are Keep, Sell, Give Away, Recycle, then what they wont/cant take goes to trash!

Sounds like this is a big change for you. I am sure you will face all types of emotions. It's good that you are downsizing which will make your move a bit easier. Wishing you the best on your next chapter. All will go well.
