I live in the same home that I was born in, back in 1933. It was built in 1921 by my grandfather and has never been out of the family. We gave this home to our youngest daughter and family, back in 1995 and retained a life lease for ourselves.
In our case, it couldn't have been a better decision. Because we gave them the home, they took over all costs, electric, heat, taxes, upkeep, etc.. Hopefully it will stay in the family with their children as there's room for two or three more homes if the property is sub-divided.
It's comforting as we've aged, to have someone nearby when health problems arise. My wife fell a couple of weeks ago and a call to her doctor resulted in a recommended trip to the Urgent Care center. Our daughter accompanied her and stayed from 7 PM 'til 2 in the AM for various tests, etc.. As I don't drive at night , it was a blessing and I didn't have to call emergency services or one of our neighbors.
