World health officials say 'considerable efforts' may be needed to control the coronavirus

Given that it can take up to 2 weeks for the initial symptoms to occur, and given that there are a lot of people who have routinely traveled to China, the potential for huge numbers of people being infected, globally, is certainly a strong possibility. Anyone living in a city environment should be Very Leery about being around crowds of people in coming weeks/months.

Time to invest in a surgical mask? Avoiding going out in crowds in public is not an option for everyone. Some of us have to whether we like it or not.

Heard on the news yesterday that the masks are getting hard to find as they are selling out everywhere. News said that most folks do not need them but to wash hands more often. It is going to create a shortage of protective items for hospitals, doctors, nurses and caregivers that need them.

Fear and intolerance are the news media's absolute favorite tools for generating profits. Be prudent, but don't be taken in. The sky isn't really falling.

"Life" is inherently dangerous. Accept that and move on. Notwithstanding the media's latest crisis du jour, take care of your body and practice good personal hygiene. That's plain common sense.

Be aware, and if you want more information seek it from reliable, legitimate sources .. not the popular media.

Agree here completely.

Definitely makes me nervous! As someone with COPD any respiratory illness passing around is already scary, never mind how quickly it's spreading. Stay safe everyone!

I heard about price gouging on surgical masks on Britain's Sky News this morning. It's probably going on all over.

Are those masks made in China?

Price fixing here is against the law, but in emergency conditions, price gouging is against the law.

A top Virologist on the Morning news said those masks people are buying over the counter are useless , the only face masks that work are those specifically made for surgeons and scientists... The ordinary person in the street is better just washing hands as often as they can...

A more worrying report today in the media here in the uk, is that a fleet of coaches were laid on to pick up passengers 83 per coach, who had flown in from China, and landed at RAF Brize Norton a military airport in Oxfordshire.. and take them to quarantine for the next 2 weeks. Paramedics were wearing Hazmat suits, yet the coach drivers had no protection whatsoever, and some were even seen shaking hands with the passengers of the plane ( potentially infected).. and further to that the coach drivers will not be spending any time in quarantine..

So obviously the hazmat suits were only there for the photos. They made the pictures more 'bright and shiny' and grabbed more attention away from more important issues.

I'm concerned about the way the United States appears to be handling the evacuation flights and fourteen-day quarantine.

From what I've seen on the news it appears that the people are all tossed in together without any substantial protection from one another. It seems to me that if one person is infected by the time the quarantine is over all of the people will be infected.

I'm also surprised that we haven't seen anything about how long the virus can survive without a host or anything addressing imports other than a disruption in the supply chain.
