Now That You're Older, Do You Have Big Birthday Celebrations, or Just Another Day?

When I was a kid, my family would have a small cake for me, and I'd get a few cards and presents. It was nice, but as I got older, I don't do very much different on that day, and that's okay with me.

Hubby used to take me out for dinner and give me flowers, etc., but I told him years ago that it wasn't necessary. We go out to a restaurant any time of the year when we're both in the mood, it doesn't have to be a special occasion. He still gives me a card and writes something nice in there, and sometimes gives a little simple gift that he thinks I may like, but not every year. I do the same with him.

How about you? Are birthdays a big celebration for you, or just another day....or somewhere in between?? :topsy_turvy:

For the wife and I, 81 and 84, birthdays are nice but we seldom make any deal about them. Our kids live 2 days away so best we can expect is an email from them, if they remember. We just look forward to many more ahead.

When I was a kid, birthdays were celebrated with dinner attended by family members. All my friends got to have birthday parties, and I always wished I could have one, too, but my mother absolutely refused. She'd send me off to my friends' parties but wouldn't let me have one. My maternal grandparents and my aunts came over for dinner and brought birthday gifts, and there was always a cake. Unfortunately, my mother not only couldn't cook very well, but she couldn't bake, either, so dinner and the birthday cake were sometimes, um, unusual:D

DD asked me what I wanted for my birthday last year, and I told her I wanted a birthday party and a cake from a bakery with ooey-gooey frosting. It didn't happen. She asked again just a week or two ago, and I told her I wanted a birthday party and a cake from a bakery with ooey-gooey frosting. Anybody want to lay odds about whether it will happen? LOL

Guess I'm too old for pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey and noisemakers and party hats. And a cake from a bakery with ooey-gooey frosting.

Never too old for that cake Georgia, I looove butter-cream frosting. :fat:

Tuesday is my hubby's birthday. I suggested we invite close relatives (as in living close) to share Yum Cha with us at our local club.
Looks like around 15- 17 will be able to attend for Sunday lunch. These include a brother and a sister, our daughter, ex daughter in law, various grand children and everyone's friends/partners.

We see all of them all the time, although some more than others, but it's nice to gather to celebrate a birthday. Any birthday.

Happy Birthday to your hubby Warrigal, hope you both have a great day! I have to ask though, what is Yum Cha?

Yum Cha means "delicacy with tea" and it originated in Hong Kong and Singapore as far as I can remember.
It's very popular in Sydney.

Trolleys loaded with baskets of hot Chinese food are wheeled past your table and if you like the look of them you accept them. If not, you pass. This goes on until everyone is satisfied. It is more like finger food than most Chinese dishes. The meal is washed down with hot green tea. You pay for each basket consumed and the overall bill is usually quite reasonable.

Here's a link to the restaurant we will be visiting, complete with menu and some photographs.

My three grown kids always send me birthday cards, and also I get some from friends/relatives that are scattered around the country.

These years, my little granddaughters that live close-by think that every occasion calls for flowers ... so if my daughter doesn't take them to the store and pick up a bunch of flowers, they will pick some in my yard and bring them in to me ..:D ... :flowers:
And they also demand that I have cupcakes for my birthday ... because they love cupcakes!! ... It's fun.

Haven't celebrated for the past 20 years or so - I could never top my epic 18th birthday party.

Warri, your yum cha sounds a lot like the dim sum parlors I used to hang out in in Chinatown. Wish a happy happy for me! :D

My kids give me gift cards for xmas, birthdays to any store, places that I frequent.

Anything else ends up in the storage room. They are all finally getting the message "No more friggin apparels at any time".:D

Oh yea, we celebrate......birthday's and the rest!

My wife LOVES celebrating my birthday and we also celebrate hers. No cake anymore b/c we are both Diabetic's and that's wayyyyyyyy to much sugar! Nice birthday card, a couple of gifts AND, as done on her birthday also, we go out for a nice dinner that night. On my birthday, that dinner was Prime Rib and for her, it's Lobster.

We also celebrate Valentine's Day w/a card and I give her a Valentine's Day stuffed toy. Since we now have costumes again, we dress up for Halloween and put up some inside and outside décor. At Christmas, we can "pull out all the stops" and decorate inside and out!. Decorate some inside for Easter and this year, we colored some eggs as well.

We do this for ourselves and folks who walk by our apartment. When we had a house in Colorado, we had two Christmas trees inside!

Hey guys, I live alone and when I need a party whether birthday or whatever, I throw one. If I had never had the party I wished for, by damn, I would surely give the one I had always wanted. Get off your duffs and throw yourself a party! Publix makes a great chocolate/strawberry cake with butter icing. Yum.
