They tore the rubber seal around two doors and a few small scratches. They were far from professional car thieves. Probably kids or an elderly couple who thought it was their car and couldn't understand why their keys didn't work.

Even that amount of damage will be costly. I have to say, I've been guilty of your last statement. A couple of years ago I parked my car in a parking lot and went shopping. When I came out I couldn't get the key to fit in the car. I tried and tried. What tipped me off was the fact that I didn't recognize anything they had inside the car. My car was white and the exact same make and color was parked right next to mine.
Luckily I didn't do any damage because I would have been careful had it really been my car and I certainly wouldn't have gone so far as to rip up the rubber seal.
I think you can rule out the elders. lol
