What has to happen for you to be able to fall asleep?

Because of severe tinnitus, I have to have the TV on at low volume, set to shut off after 30 minutes. If I haven't fallen asleep, I re-set it. My usual sleep time is 2:00am to 8:00am.
And (after weight loss), I'm always cold. I sleep in thick socks, polyester sweat pants & 2 polyester sweaters. And a polyester blanket.
I have tinnitus as well. Strangely enough two t.v. stations sign off at night and broadcast a test pattern and a sound. Luckily the sound is a high pitch frequency just right to mask the tinnitus. I should record it for use at any time. I'm always cold as well. I have one of those bags that warm up in the microwave. Warm hands seem to radiate.

trouble is your body needs sleep to carry out necessary repairs to your body . There are some schools of thought and study which says that those who don't get enough mental rest are more likely to suffer dementia type illnesses... not certain that it's been proven but it's been reported a lot.
Not to worry when you are retired. You will fall asleep watching t.v. sitting up next day. If you have to go to work you just suffer.

Do your friends tell you to have your thyroid checked like mine do? :)
I told my doctor I'm always cold & always hungry. She said my thyroid is normal...both with blood tests and feeling around.
Ya know, I don't think those tests are worth much...;

I like a cool room too. Throughout the night, besides my husband, I share my side of the bed with the dog, cat or both. I always have a tiny radio under my pillow, the size of the old transistors, and I usually put that on a talk show. It often lulls me to sleep, sometimes perhaps out of boredom, but it works. I might fall asleep with it on, but that's okay, all good. As long as the volume isn't too loud, my husband doesn't hear a thing.

I also use sleep aids sometimes, like Valerian, Chamomile, Melatonin or half a Unisom. If I have a night where I'm tossing and turning, I try not to let it bother me. I no longer have the stress of having to wake to an alarm early in the morning for work, and just being in bed is somewhat restful....try to make the best of it and look forward to a better night sleep the following night.

I'm like Ronni, EVERYTHING has to be perfect. And once everything is accounted for, I have to shut of my mind. Some days, that' easy to do. Then there are days when I can't. Ideas will just be bouncing around my mind. Momentous things, like how many bricks are there in China's Great Wall, how does sperm get inside a chicken egg, or what's the best crew size for a Martian invasion?

A good dose of THC
A bath , brushed teeth & hair and clean sheets
Using spray lavender on my pillow
Tuck my girls in bed after their bedtime pee
Turn the heat down and stock the wood stove

I had been sleeping badly when a friend advised me to use a touch of Lavender oil on my pillow and, when I settled down at night take a deep breath to a count of five, hold for five counts and exhale for five, do this five times, maybe it’s phycological but it really works for me, I now get around seven hours sleep a night

True, sticking burping material in your belly ain't proper. your belly reminds you it ain't proper by them hot burps that burn.

However, there is always a cure-never had a problem falling asleep when I was dead drunk, (only one time in dozens and dozens of times and that was 'cause my room thought it was a merry-go-round)

I TOLD THE the folks down at AA about this; they run me off
