My town (Nashville) hit with massive Tornado. Death toll at 21 so far

It woke me up a bit after midnight. The winds were howling, rain and then hail pelting down. I watched several tree limbs ripped away in both my neighbor's yard and my own. We didn't sustain any significant damage, though it whipped through our open back porch and tore it all to hell.

The path of the tornado moved through sections of East Nashville and downtown, approximately following Interstate 40, which is 5 - 10 minutes down the road from us. It apparently was on the ground for around 40 minutes.

Here's a local news report and some photos. The photos show the devastation in various areas.

This is a local school 10 minutes away from us and several houses on the same street.

One of of our friends lost their home. Several have minor to major damage. One of my close friends reached out to me last night in tears because her son's girlfriend who drove home from her late shift arrived to find her home destroyed and her mother inside, dead.

All Nashville schools are closed today. Two of the counties that are hardest hit have closed their schools at least for the week.

Interstate 40 is closed in a couple of areas both ways. Several of my friends can't get to work because of damage to roads, subdivisions/live wires etc. A couple more have no work to go to..the building has been destroyed.

It's bad, folks.

Now that it's light, we got outside to walk the property to see what's up. Lots of limbs down, some gutters ripped away, the roof of our back porch ripped and rolled up, and some of it in the yard. Cars are OK...I was worried about the hail exploding windows, but that didn't happen.

Tornadoes are the Worst....they hit with little or no warning. Hurricanes do more damage, but at least those people get several hours, or days of warning to prepare. We lived in Wichita, KS., in the early 70's, and had to head for the tornado shelter several times every year. I've seen the damage these storms do, and it's not pretty.

My sister [half sister] lives in Old Hickory....east of Nashville center.......Hope they're OK.
@rgp We live in Old Hickory too!! It wasn’t as hard hit as some areas, but bad enough to down trees, rip the roof off our porch, topple outside furniture.

I have been through Old Hickory on my way to Hendersonville to visit a friend. I hope his place is still standing.

I remember when we were flying into the path of a tornado in Texas and I had thought about climbing to get above it, but decided to just go around and leave it be.

Relieved to hear that you and your family are ok. Those photos show mother Nature at her worst. Stay safe and be careful with clean up and venturing out.
Speaking of cleanup, my son, son in law and a friend took the day off work to help with some of the cleanup in the devastated area of Germantown, one of the worst hit.

OH dear God... I can't say anything that hasn't said before Ronni, except to say thank Goodness you and the family are ok, but the heartbreak of losing friend or friends losing relatives must be hard to bear, and the sheer devastation of everyone's properties. This is so shocking...

You're lucky in that Ron and your boys are there to help rebuild and repair..I'm sorry they're in the position to have to do this, but the poor people who are not only going through grief of losing a loved one are also going through the devastation of losing their homes. Absolutely heartbreaking for them..many I'm sure will be ill and or poor and this will affect them even more deeply than younger stronger ones..

The picture of that car blown 3 floors up, is horrific... and really brings home the reality of the speed and strength of the Tornado.

I hope someone will start an online fund for those who are desperately now in need...
