Too much information?

Have you heard of "Doxxing"? Can't remember the threads; one was where everyone lived in their lives, another was what bank they use. I'm personally going to be more careful of the information I give out. I've been babbleing about everything, not aware that someone is monitering all this info on me.
My friend recently lost her home, her business and had her bank accounts cleaned out. All this because of a man she met online. Just be careful, my friends.
 

A select few know my first name,two know my surname and three have my e-mail.Some know the town where I live.But that is as a result of trust built up up over several years-often on more than one forum.Things like which bank I use,addresses etc no forum user is getting those.Can’t see why knowing someones birthday is a problem but again that is a personal choice.I think mine is on my profile but it might not be!
 
only a fool would give out such private details on any site --- people seem to forget end of day we all total strangers ..
scammers log in to lots of sites to get info on a person as stated above , least u give out the safer all round ...;)(y)
 
I am a fairly open personality, have no problem saying where I live. It goes without saying that bank information is for your information only.

Somehow I always wonder if those who disclose absolutely nothing other than a made up first name only have something to hide.

It could be they got stung once and said never again or it could be something more. They could be hiding from an ex, or switched forums and don't want others from the former forum to see them at the new forum.

I have formed a few personal relationships through forums, would never have had that if not for being open as I think people do see a personality online after a bit. Met these people in person, happy memories.

Maybe they do Lee, but not necessarily anything bad, it could be work related, they could be under witness protection, famous, extremely wealthy, in the slammer, who knows ?

If they’re contributing to the site, with interesting and amusing posts, I don’t see what difference it makes

I may yak on about my stuff, but am a tad careful with blathering critical personal info
Not too worried about someone knowing which bank I use

I do have a concern with using a debit card just anywhere

As for where I live?

I used to think that thieves went after overly trusting people, who just blabbed their banking info all over the place. UNTIL, I got a letter from Social Security confirming that my checks were no longer being deposited into my checking account, but being sent to an address. WTF!!!! I called SS, and got it straightened out. There's a thing, now, where my checks can't be rerouted. With all the legitimate stuff you do online, you don't realize that not everybody is honest, and true.

I saw a show (I think it was American Greed) a few days ago about a swindler that took money from money women he met at on line dating services. He hacked in to their personal lives an used their credit cards and savings and checking accounts simply by opening their purses and or hacking in to their accounts and blew in some cases 100% of their savings. He even went so far as to buy them luxurious items such as boats using their money! Thankfully one woman took it upon herself to stay on top of this guy's every movement for years as he kept adding women victims to his list. He was one o those super pro talkers believing he could lie to everyone including the authorities and get away with it which he did for many years.
 
In more innocent times, maybe about 20 years ago, I enjoyed participating in an online "fan club" for a popular TV show that was filmed near where I lived. Our group of "fans" was a friendly one, and we met once a year for a get-together. Most of them were lovely people. Some of them met over that web site and eventually got married. But one guy turned out to be pretty creepy, and I wasn't too thrilled about him having our real identities and addresses at his disposal. No harm came of it, he was mostly just a lonely person, but still. I heard that he ended up in prison.


I would not expose myself in that way now. The internet is too big, and too dangerous.
