I wonder what effect Coronavirus will have on insurance companies.

Grampa Don

Yep, that's me
It's not that I'm really concerned about the insurance industry, but an awful lot of people are sick and dying and there will be a lot of claims. Do you suppose they will get a bail out? What happens if some of them go broke? Is there any backup for policy holders?

Or perhaps some of the for-profit companies will see a decrease in their stock prices and dividends.
Boo hoo.

I fully expect health care insurance premiums to go up substantially, as a result of this virus. If there is Any good about this situation, it might be that our People AND Government will begin to take a serious look at some form of Universal Coverage....similar to what has been working out quite well for those in other nations. Sure, that would require higher taxes, but probably far less, for most people, than what these insurance companies charge.

Most statistics show that we pay twice as much for health care as most other nations....and the last time the WHO ranked the nations, in terms of quality of care, etc., the U.S. came in at about number 35.
