Coronavirus.... herd stupidity

My neighbor, a nurse,...... said that many/all that are dying of a respiratory related disease is being listed as a COVID victim. She went on to say that in her experience [20+] years, these folks [elderly] would very likely have died from respiratory failure in due time anyway. Did testing positive for COVID help it along? We'll never know I suppose. But IMO, COVID has become a very convenient blanket just now ?

The death rate from all causes in places like New York is much higher than normal right now. Something is causing it and my bet is on COVID-19.

With that said, we will have to start reopening businesses fairly soon. We just don't have the resources to stay in lockdown forever.

Comparing this disease with ordinary flu is ridiculous. It would be more accurate to compare it to past epidemics of smallpox, bubonic plague, TB, cholera, ebola in Africa, etc. There are diseases, and then there are pandemics of monumental proportions.

And before somebody brings up 1918, that Spanish flu was a rare extreme in the history of flu. Bad as the flu is, it doesn't usually wipe out millions of people, as this disease potentially will do.

So, Aneeda, explain the difference of dying with the flu in 2017, and dying with the virus in 2020? I don't know.
BTW," Pandemic" refers to the amount of land mass that is affected. It doesn't mean it is more severe than an epidemic. A pandemic affects a much wider area.
