How Much Food Do You Have Right Now?

Just did a major stock up, so both freezers pretty full. Being that it is just me, I could go until mid summer without buying meat ,frozen vegetables and such. So I could go a long time, as my pantry is filled with non perishable foods too.
I am not much of a bread or milk person, so could do without for a while, no problem.

Months. We have a freezer filled with food, a pantry of canned and dry goods, and seeds of vegetables which will be planted. Theres plenty of dried fruit , dried beans , lentils , noodles and ingredients for baking items. This year I’m growing more in order to can some things . I may use my greenhouse all year long. We even are stocked up on frozen vegetables.
This is me for the most part, minus the gardening. I've tried it here, but the deer destroy it in short order (even with a 6' high electric fence.) I have not made the investment to attempt Tier II protection (a second perimeter fence to fool the deer, who have poor depth-perception.)

I've commented elsewhere that I'm on a mission to eat what I've already got in the freezer (raw and prepared) and kiddingly estimated a Christmas completion date. That might not be too much of an exaggeration.

One of my spare bedroom closets is my pantry.

The only thing I would be missing is fresh produce to make salads. I've been surprised (and glad) that the supply chain of produce generally remains intact during this mess.

I have been keeping a rolling three week supply on hand since the pandemic began.

If I lose power that would cut it back to approx. 10 days of no fun but still edible shelf-stable nutritious food. 🤢

If the power stays on and I begin to run low on food I have a large unopened tub of oatmeal that contains 30 servings so I could probably limp along for another 10 days.

For me, it would be more about adjusting my attitude than an actual lack of food.

Amen, Sister!
Ain't THAT the truth for many of us???

The first week this thing hit and the stores were panic-savaged, I noticed one little island of cans in the soup aisle, sitting all by itself. I walked over and actually laughed out loud: Cream of Mushroom soup. Every brand, every size.

All I could think was "Well, you're not that hungry, are you?"

Since I went to the grocery store a couple of days ago, I have basically everything I'll need for 1-2 weeks. The only exceptions are milk and yogurt- can get milk at the convenience store, but they don't sell yogurt.

My milk comes in plastic bags and I have frozen them before a long time ago and remember it changed the taste of the milk so I haven't done it before. I would be afraid of freezing a 'cardboard' container in case it exploded. You could try it to find out.

I found this on the internet:

If your milk comes in a glass or cardboard container, transfer it into a freezer-safe plastic container before you freeze. Milk will expand when frozen, causing glass or cardboard to break — and you don't want that mess in your freezer.
You could buy dried milk.

well, I won’t eat either, it will be rice and beans for me 🤣
I had that diet for nearly 6 months when I was first diagnosed with high cholesterol. Also threw some TVP in with it...and of course fruits & veggies. I pounded my numbers down real far, real fast. Then I fell back into old habits.

I need to get back closer to what you're doing. I'm a sedentary little piggie.

Oh, I would eat meat if I could, tummy doesn’t like it. When I was in the hospital a couple years ago in addition to my acute problem I was diagnosed with adult failure to thrive because I wasn’t getting enough protein. I make a effort now to eat ground beef and hot dogs.

I'm so sorry to hear that.

I've gone meatless for a while. My ex was a vegetarian.
It's not easy to adjust back to digesting meat, especially if there are other issues.
And animal protein is so "caloric dense."

I had some severe digestive problems a couple of years ago that went unattended to because I lost my health insurance. It got pretty bad. It affected my breathing as well. When I finally got my insurance addressed, I had a CT scan with barium contrast and then a colonoscopy just a few days later (with it's required prep.) The day after my colonoscopy, my digestive issues were gone. I was still achy, but I could also tell that things were better. This was after a year of suffering.

I think those cleansings flushed out some bad bacteria. My gastroenterologist threw the BS flag on that opinion, but he couldn't tell me why things got suddenly better...and he recommended that I take probiotics to repopulate the good bacteria that got flushed out! Nothing was ever discovered from any of those tests...after over a year, I just suddenly "got better."

I hope things get (stay?) manageable for you.
Our bodies are so daggone complex.

I have gastroparesis. And a slew of other issues with my disgestive tract. I have had two resections. The doctors predicted it will completely fail by the time I am 75. When it goes I go, but then again I have so many other issues I can die from, 😂. Maybe some else will “get” me first.

It's crazy.

I may have shared this elsewhere here...I can't recall:
-My father died from pancreatic cancer at 55
-My older brother died of lung cancer at 53
-One younger brother died of lung cancer just last year at 60 (ten days after being diagnosed)

So I got all that intestinal stuff and breathing stuff and a little coughing up blood stuff at 63, and you know where my head was.

I'll be 66 years old the middle of this month:
-To have lived to signed up for Social Security is unknown among my male relatives.
-To have lived to signed up for Medicare is a friggin' miracle.

I wish I could reach out and make things all better for you.
Life is not for sissies.

No. It’s not! But I’m good to go at any time. I don’t want to live forever.

I've putzed around this forum a bit and saw someone suggested a Philosophy area. I don't know why it was never created.

It's not easy being human, damned with this sense of self-awareness.
I watch a dog lick its own butt without a moment's introspection and am somewhat jealous...not of the act, you understand. ;)

I don't have as much as I thought we did. We're beginning to eat soups, and we only do that when we're running low something more substanual to eat.

I don't care for meat and like a few others here, I can't really digest it so I don't miss it. I probably have enough food to last 3 weeks, maybe longer. I think I have more food for the dog than I have for myself 🙂
