What Things are You Stocked Up on Now?

Anyone remember the show "Extreme Couponing" from a few years back?
Most of them had some pretty significant stockpiles(hoardes),wonder if they helped friends and family during these difficult days?
I saw reruns of the show on TV last week, and was wondering the same thing. Some said, at the time, they gave to food banks.

My niece, who is a bit of an alarmist over all this, sent me a $100 Visa gift card...telling me to "buy more meat". Sigh. It is just me, and as I have said in other threads, I do not eat a lot of meat any more. If I were to stop buying meat today, I would not run out for 2-3 months. And I do not even have an over abundance on hand.
So I graciously thanked her for the card, and went on a planned shopping trip for some canned goods, cleaning staples and some fresh things. I know she is concerned about me, and I do appreciate that. She knows she has a better income than my fixed one. She just wants to be sure I am OK.

I thought about it Ruth, but after years of sitting on the shelf, I tossed my bottle of aloe vera gel. It was harsh on my sunburned skin and harsh on any skin irritations. I don't mind cutting a leaf from an aloe plant for something, and I regularly have Aloe Vera Inner Fillet juice on hand....but that gel was something I never used. I kicked myself when I saw it was a common ingredient in homemade sanitizer, but wasn't about to bother buying more.

Are you happy with your homemade sanitizer, is it gentle on your hands? Do you bring any with you when you go out?
Yes, I'm happy with it but don't use it as much as I use regular soap. Yes I take it with me when I go out somewhere and have used it then too. There are different aloe vera gels having different ingredients--mine also has Vit. E in it.

Since I moved to this rural area in 2010, I've deeply stocked everything I need. When I lived in the suburbs, the store was less than 1 mile away. Now it's a 16-20 mile round trip.

Canned food
Frozen food (in fact, too much)
Pasta
Flour
Sugar
Extra 12 paks of tp
Extra 12 paks of paper towel
Toiletries, etc.
Freeze dried survival foods

I use the closet in an extra bedroom as a pantry. I never get down to my "last" of anything...I always replenish backup inventory.

I've mentioned before that the primary food concern I had was fresh produce, and so far that's been fine, with some low-level blots locally that are 100% remediated by a trip into the next city if need be.

My achilles heel is loss of electricity, because I'm on well water. I need to address that.

Years ago I found an aloe-based cream by "Nature's Family." Aloe was the first ingredient. It was wonderful for sunburn and other irritations (although like you, I keep an aloe plant around for severe burns.) That company went out of business. I've yet to find a replacement. I agree, the pure gel is harsh...almost acidic.

I've always had plenty of backstock in my pantry. Even more so now. Can't say I'd match @Gary O' though. ;)

Plenty of rice, pasta, canned & dried beans, 60 lbs of various flours, 20 lbs of sugar, yeast, canned & frozen veggies, applesauce, frozen fruit, frozen nuts (for baking & cooking), frozen cheese (for making pizza), at least 15 lbs of coffee between beans & ground, 1-1/2 cases of shelf stable almond milk, good stock on spices. Lots of tomatoes, zucchini, cilantro & basil coming up in the garden.

We could survive for many months without shopping, though the food would get repetitious after a while if I couldn't supplement with fresh produce.

And yes, I'd share with someone who was hungry.

Have you divided you r flour among sealed bags? I have a big thing of flour and of rice, but it went buggy. And being single, I really wasn't going through it that fast. (I'll have to tell you my story sometime about the 1# of baking powder I bought.)

We keep flour flour in galvanized trash cans with tight fitting lids. I go through about 150 lbs of flour per year, sometimes more, so 60 lbs isn't as outrageous a number as it might sound. Whole wheat flour and rice get stored in the freezer so they don't go rancid.

Thanks for reminidng me, it does that. I think I used to keep extra in the freezer, to prevent bugs, after it once happened to mine. I have a little extra now, and it's a good practice to go back to.
I always have at least one extra 5# bag of flour and sugar...sometimes more. When I run out of the "working bag" in my kitchen and grab some out of inventory, I add it to my shopping list to replenish.

Not only did I start this when I moved to the country out of convenience, but sometimes my local Walmart would be out of something when I needed it, and my next-closest store is 15 miles from there. Back north in the suburbs, there were 4-5 grocery stores within walking distance of each other, and from home in a pinch.

So I learned my lesson. Nothing I routinely use runs low. I installed a shelving unit in that bedroom closet.

The one thing I've wanted to try but have put on the back burner is mylar bags and O2 absorbers. I've used them at events where we assembled MREs to help the hungry, but never for my own stuff.

Well Our PM has announced grandly that Open air markets will be opening again on the 1st of June... and all stores will be open by the 15th of June... ... not sure how I feel about that tbh.. but anyway..I would imagine that many of us will be stocking up again on what we need so we can be ready for the second wave of the virus which I have a sinking feeling will happen when millions of people take to the shops and stores all at one time .... and further lockdowns come autumn or sooner..:cautious:...I sincerely hope not but I can't imagine that it won't happen tbh

I have similar hopes and concerns. Most of my friends and relatives (all ages) aren't planning to return to normal activity levels anytime soon. We'll wait and see how all this plays out before sticking our collective toes back into the public waters.

If I'm being over-cautious, I'll have stayed at home an extra couple of months. A risk I can live with.

Now..... as in since this BS started?

Really nothing new or extra... We always try and stay stocked up....
Actually I bought a 9 pack of TP shortly after it started as a joke, Thats the only TP we have bought since it started.
And its still un opened in our camper.....

If I didn't go out at all I would be fine for at least a month, probably longer. I'm not a fan of shelf-stable foods like canned soups, macaroni and cheese, boxed cereal, things like that. But I now have some, albeit not much, should I need it in the future. I'm vegetarian which I think makes it a little easier to get by,

After living thru this pandemic all alone, I know that I will do whatever it takes to get to my daughter‘s house and isolate there....she has plenty of supplies.

Maybe if Pickles was still alive it would have been a little easier...he was my companion after all...and we talked and he’d make me laugh with his antics.....
