Do You Have Any Good Stories About Police?

I absolutely do. I was parked across the street from my house and didn't go out in time to move my car. My boss who lived about 40 minutes away and always got to work early called me to tell me a cop was getting ready to ticket my car (good thing I left my work placard with the phone number in the window). I rush outside to encounter this handsome cop who looked so much like Tom Selleck they could have been brothers! Left me nearly speechless but happy that he waited for me and didn't write the ticket.

The heartwarming photo below which went viral after this child, Devonte Hart who was holding a "free hugs" sign was hugged by an officer amid unrest over the shooting of Michael Brown. In a tragic twist, a couple of years later Devonte and his family died when the SUV they were in plunged off a cliff in California into the ocean.

I read a story not too long ago about an officer that was called to a supermarket because a woman was caught stealing. Instead of arresting her after finding out that her children were going hungry, he bought groceries for her and let her go.

I've read a few stories about officers who mentor underprivileged children. KUDOS to all the good officers in the country. May they all be safe.

This story touched my heart too. It was gut wrenching but it’s what the world needed to see. Not all cops abuse their power. Most are reasonable, sensitive souls

Remember the days of traffic cops, standing out in the street and blowing a whistle? We had a cop like that, assigned to his corner when the kids were walking to school. (Good grief, walking!) His name was Al, I don't think anyone ever knew his last name.

When I graduated from elementary school, he signed my autograph book "Al the Cop." Everybody loved him. He was a really friendly guy who knew many of the kids by name, and not for the wrong reasons. I have always had a soft spot for the police because of him.

Seeing these horrifying events on the news is a very sad development. What has happened, and why?

My point was that because of those advantages I wasn't apt to be profiled and therefore unlikely to have unprovoked, negative encounters with police.
I.ve never had a ticket in my life....We have advantages now, but we worked for it.....

IMO we've moved away from the concept of the police being seen as peace officers and public servants towards being viewed strictly as law enforcement officers.

When I was a kid we had the county sheriff deputies and the state police patrolling our area.

In those days most officers kept one eye closed. The emphasis seemed to be on public safety and conflict resolution as opposed to enforcing the law. Some laws may have been broken but as long as no one was injured and property damage was repaired not much action was taken and for the most part, people got along.

It may not have been right but it seemed to work.

My strangest encounter was when I was younger and lived in the city. To avoid people I went swimming at a man made lake in the middle of the night since I swam a long way.

After a long swim I tried myself, put my clothes, leather jacket and helmet on. My hair wasn’t dry so it was stuck down my bike inside my shirt.

While driving home I got pulled over by what looked like to undercover officers. I wasn’t too concerned since I wasn’t speeding or doing anything wrong. They had a flashing light on their car. I’d never encountered undercover cops before so asked to see their badge which they showed me. They then asked me to show them my drivers licence which I did. Then they asked me to take off my helmet to make sure it’s me. I wasn’t happy about that but figured it was fair enough. They don’t know who I am.

Once I took off my helmet they asked why my hair was wet and where I was going? That’s when I got really suspicious and asked if they were really cops.
They both burst out laughing, handed me back my license, thanked me and left. They seemed incredibly high. To this day I don’t think they were real cops but a couple of crazy guys pulling a stunt to get their kick. It ticked me off but most of my experiences have been positive ones.
Oh, wow! I'm glad you were okay after all that!

I think that's a wonderful story.

I've heard police moral is low now and I can understand why. Most of them do so much good.

It’s the middle of the night and I’m not sleeping.
This was a scary ordeal. Scary in that these were either real cops not taking their job seriously or cop wanna be’s impersonating police officers. If this didn’t happen at a busy intersection I would have been even more scared but it was in the city so plenty of witnesses if anything went wrong.
Now wherever I see undercover cops it reminds me of this incident. It was a creepy thing for these two to do. Clearly they were merely playing with me for whatever reason. Maybe they made a bet or something . Who knows but they had no reason to pull me over so it’s still a mystery to me to this day.

Seems like a real mystery but I'm Glad You Came out of it alright.

In the past I have encountered police who were little more than bullies in uniform. Loved to throw their weight around and lie to justify their actions.

I've also known a couple of cops socially who had a very cynical view of society. Right, a small digression... Back in Hampshire, a local drug dealer became very depressed when his court case kept being postponed. He had threatened to commit suicide if this continued, and when his trial was postponed again, he hanged himself in a nearby park. Two things... his young son went to the school where my wife worked, and apparently, if this boy drew a tree, he would draw a man hanging from it. I related this to the police sergeant that I knew, and he just said, "He was a heroin user - well that's one piece of scum we won't have to deal with"

One day the other office I knew wasn't in a good mood. He had the misfortune of being the first officer to attend a suicide, and he complained bitterly about the amount of paperwork that he had to complete.
