From the article about the shooting that happened Thursday afternoon:
Clergy, officials ask for calm in wake of Savannah-Chatham police officer shooting, killing suspect. Savannah and Chatham County religious and civic leaders gathered Friday afternoon in a West Savannah church to appeal for calm a day after a white police officer shot and killed a black suspect who was under arrest and handcuffed on a street in the same neighborhood.
This is what officer's told GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who have been asked to conduct an investigation of this shooting:
Officer's had outstanding warrants for the arrest of Charles Smith. When the officers placed Smith under arrest, he was handcuffed behind his back, and that the arrest was recorded on video. After Smith was placed in the patrol car, he somehow moved his hands to the front of his body and was able to kick out a window of the vehicle. The officers said, "as Smith attempted to exit the patrol car, they saw that he had a firearm," the GBI said in its statement. "This encounter resulted in Smith being shot and killed at the scene." Officers told the GBI that as Smith tried to exit the patrol car, they saw he had a gun. Crime scene investigators found a gun under Smith’s body. The officer who did the shooting is on admin leave now.
Dozens of people gathered in a Savannah neighborhood at the shooting scene, which was cordoned off by police tape.
Some of them cried and hugged, a few appeared outwardly angry, and a handful carried signs to voice their views, video from CNN affiliate WTOC shows. At one point, many of them -- including some children -- joined hands in a circle.
"The amount of people in the street" spurred the Chatham Emergency Management Agency to send out automatic calls to warn staff and volunteers about a "potential civil unrest situation," agency spokeswoman Meredith Ley told CNN. She added that such notifications are standard for times like a parade or a marathon when there's a situation with "a large amount of people that could escalate quickly."
As to Smith, the man killed, a friend described him as "cool people."
"He was willing to help out," another friend told WTOC. "He was willing. If you ... needed help, he got you."
Now, my question:
Just how did this dude have a gun on him when handcuffed and put into the patrol car???? I though all suspects were searched before handcuffs put on and placed in a patrol car.
