As I was watching several different news outlets this weekend, one such station was talking about BLM, which peaked my interest. Shaun King, one of the co-founders of Real Justice PAC and is also associated with BLM tweeted on 6/22 the following: “Yes, I think the statues of the white European they claim is Jesus should also come down. They are a form of white supremacy. Always have been. In the Bible, when the family of Jesus wanted to hide, and blend in, guess where they went? EGYPT! Not Denmark. Tear them down.” If you have a stained glass window with a white Jesus, you may want to put up some type of protective covering.

BLM is a 501 (c)(3) non profit organization and therefore; is permitted to accept donations. Many large corporations, such as: Amazon, Microsoft, Facebook and others have made millions of dollars in contributions to BLM. This year alone, BLM has donated millions of dollars to others as well. One such contribution amounted to $120 million. I thought to myself, “Wow, they could have sent a lot of black kids to college with all that money.”

Yes. All murals and stained glass windows of white Jesus, and his European mother, and their white friends should also come down. They are a gross form white supremacy. Created as tools of oppression. Racist propaganda. They should all come down. Shaun King

Do you agree?

Well, I'm reminded of a ten-foot-pole.

That said, Jesus was supposed to have be born(?) near Jerusalem, correct? I'd point out that there are plenty of (in this later day) Jews who are light-skinned.

Okay. Back to my ten-foot-pole.

post 1. proof:every idiot on the planet can post whatever they choose
(we do understand that only applies to the topic, not the poster- we're getting
so worked up with these topics, need to be careful and precise.)

It's things like this which make me not a fan of the organization though I strongly believe we have so much further to go in combating racism in this country. Instead of working for meaningful progress, they are alienating people sympathetic to racial issues.

The description of Jesus in the Bible does not match the Jesus we see in most churches. Bible historians have said that according to where Jesus reportedly came from it is likely he was a man of color. It is also alleged that the image of Jesus we are used to seeing is actually that of Cesar Borgia as painted by Michelangelo.

Jesus' race is touched on in the article below in which the Archbishop of Canterbury who is head of the Church of England was asked if the white image of Jesus needs to be reconsidered.

"Yes, of course it does," he said, adding that Jesus was portrayed differently in countries around the world. He was regularly in touch with Anglican Church leaders from around the world, he said, who did not portray Jesus as White.
"You go into their churches and you don't see a White Jesus -- you see a Black Jesus, or Chinese Jesus, or a Middle Eastern Jesus -- which is of course the most accurate." Complete article here:

I’m terrible at getting into conversations about religion. I go to church, but not Sunday School and Wednesday night Bible study. Sometimes, I think a lot of what we read is left up to our own interpretation. Not everything can be or needs to be explained.

Right- "bronze" skin and "wooly" hair don't add up to the individual usually seen in paintings.

However, I don't agree with the person @911 quoted that it was a matter of the popular paintings 'Created as tools of oppression. Racist propaganda.' either.
It was probably a matter of the original artist's impression- even if the artist was mistaken.

My mental picture is Middle Eastern. But that's not at all the point of the OP. The issue is a founder of BLM advocating destruction of property.

Do you really want to fight racism? Defund BLM.

Please do not turn this into a religious wrangle:

Isaiah 53 gives us a physical description of Jesus, if the hue of his skin was important
it would have been mentioned; it was not and is not important.

Post 6 should be read

Shaun King knows better-he has posted several inflammatory topics.
He is what Harry Truman used to call a headline-grabber: Nefarious

BLM is essentially a Marxist organization. Their goal is to turn your property into their property.

I’m terrible at getting into conversations about religion but even more so lately. I’m trying to be as open minded as can be but can’t help thinking of all the heads that are going to roll if they aren’t alteady.

I personally think Jesus existed but his real image was tainted to appease the majority of believers and this all started with the Catholic Church. They had and still hold a lot of power which I believe has been abused and distorted to serve its followers.

Note: I’m not however a religious person but most certainly know how serious many people are about this topic and just the idea of changing the general image of Jesus is going to make some see red. Heads are gonna roll.

I truly feel horrible for humanity. We’ve been handling one of history’s worst pandemics due to worldly advances in how people travel, have witnessed more power related brutality than ever before and are now facing racial WARS which I don’t think will ever end.

Luckily God is colour blind but none of that logic will come into play. Mankind is ruthless and barbaric. They always have been and always will be no matter what colour dominates

Janice there's so much history behind Shaun King and other Black people feeling that it's part of our oppression. People need to realize that our history was hidden from us, stripped from us really, including our true religion. We were taught that Black is something to be ashamed of. We were not shown positive images of ourselves in the history books, magazines nor on T.V. (even) for a very long time. 70% of the slaves that were brought here were Muslims (I learned this watching a program geared toward Christians many years ago). We were taught that Christianity was "the way" and (for some Christians) to worship a man who looked like them, not a man of color.

I grew up Christian and never remember our minister saying to worship anyone but God and now that I think of it, I don't remember seeing a picture of Jesus hanging in the church. I accepted Islam when I was in my 40s. Anyway...it's a sensitive issue because it encompasses so many facets of Black lives and this topic only scratches the surface. I am not the "angry Black woman" that we are so often (mis) portrayed when we speak out against injustices. But I am a woman who wants to know the truth. Don't give me an onion and tell me it's an apple.

I thought it went much further back, but the Jesus painting that most people are familiar with was actually painted in 1940 by a Finnish/Swedish Evangelical Protestant from Chicago.

I hope this doesn't come out wrong, but when I read a little about Shaun King I got the same impression I got regarding the football player from awhile back- both only knew their white mothers, the football player had an absent black father whereas S. King had an unknown-possibly-black father-- so maybe these guys are trying to prove something to themselves personally.

Did you verify the TV show info with scholastic sources? In doing genealogy, I've worked with black clients and have read some early history of slavery. Remember reading something about early Muslim slaves but it was a specific geographic part of Africa and not nearly 70%. That's one of the points the author made ...that early slaves were so diverse in language, religion and cultural practices depending on their origins in Africa that it made the earliest slaves vulnerable to subjugation since there was nothing beyond skin color and continental origin to unify. I'll look for the source...

Well, I'm willing to take OneEyedDiva's word for it that she has her facts accurate.. although my African ancestors weren't Muslim.

Who knows Janice! I think people are just tired of the status quo regarding the inequities.

@AnnieA OMG...that was a PBS show so long ago! I didn't even know what a computer was back then let alone have access to one. I was working hard to take care of myself and my son and may have been attending college part time. I just know I didn't have time to run to the library to check anything. Plus I probably trusted that PBS had done the necessary research before airing the program. I have a cousin who is a historian. You brought up interesting points. I'll ask him what he knows about it.

One of the things you learn doing genealogy is that there are so many historical inaccuracies in televension documentaries and books without scholarly sources ...and even scholars have trouble with issues like this due to the losses to time and circumstance. It's not like slave owners cared to preserve the history of those they enslaved.
