Nationwide change shortage, anywhere else having this issue?

Notes at our stores say-please pay with exact change. So I asked why and was told there was a nation wide shortage of coins due to people using their debt cards, credit cards, because of the virus. Apparently people are afraid of using their money so they are keeping their change.

This doesn’t make sense to me, but what do I know? Anyone else heard of this issue?

Yes it's happened here because stores/restaurants/pubs/bars and cafe's are all requesting people pay using contactless methods.. therefore nowhere has any change. I was just thinking today how the street beggars and buskers are doing with this lack of change around..

But if no one is using money then wouldn’t you have more change in the till, not less? Because you are not giving it out. I guess I just don’t understand it.

well no-one would have change in the till after the lockdown, it would have all been banked when everything closed , and since they re-opened, there wouldn't be very much available because no-one is giving change to pay for goods..

Yes. I've seen signs here also. However, since the restrictions began, I've been telling the cashiers to keep the change I'm supposed to get back because I don't trust how sanitary it is. I pay as close as I can get to the exact amount so that I won't get any $ back. I also use a debit card as much as I can.

Being naturally suspicious, I'd have a doubt or two about the "change shortage". They just want to cut down on the amount of nasty change their employees have to handle and the chance that you'd be willing to say "OK, no problem" when your 13 cents in change wasn't forthcoming. Add that 13 cents up from all the 7-11's in the country and you have some extra income coming in.

Companies look for all kinds of extra ways to make money. Years ago, when you had to go into the filling station and give them money or charge FIRST before you could pump, there was one chain that had a sneaky little way to get a few more cents out of you.

You'd give them a $20 bill and go and start pumping. The pump would automatically stop at $20.....BUT....the pump would get incredibly s-l-o-o-o-w starting at about $19.50. $19.51.....$19.52....$19.53...slowly, slowly, slow. Yes, it would go all the way up to $20.00 IF you were willing to stand in the cold or wind or rain to get your last 50 cents. I always did because I'm cheap, but I'm sure enough people said #$@%-it and quit. Pump resets to $0 and the next sucker customer drives in.

As I said, I'm cynical and suspicious by nature.

I posted about this problem a couple of days ago in the financial section.
What I'd read is the government has been making less coins.
Whatever the reason is, it's a big bother- there are some situations in which coins are necessary.

I've gone completely cashless for several years, now. I can't get rid of the change. I have a huge glass jug full of coins. It's hard to find a bank that will take loose change. You have to have an acct, with at least $100. Yes, I know there's a bank in Terra Haute, IND. that'll take change, but nothing around me. I use a debit/credit card for everything.

Strange, our banks all have coin changers, just like in las vegas, 😆
