Do any SF members live there? What the heck is going on?

They just looted an Amazon Go store in Seattle. Apparently the cops in Portland are standing down?

In Portland they have"The Wall Of Moms" now protecting the protestors ??? ... unbelievable!

A group of women banded together to form a human wall to protect protesters from federal officers in Portland over the weekend. There have been 52 days and nights of protests since the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, which have turned violent after federal authorities have been sent in earlier this month.

After a Facebook post called for mothers to make a "Wall of Moms," dozens wearing white and helmets attended Saturday. They stood arm-in-arm with each other, forming a barrier between federal agents and demonstrators. The gathering came after a report that federal officials from a number of agencies have been driving around and detaining people.

"We moms are often underestimated," organizer Bev Barnum said in the event page. "But we're stronger than we're given credit for."

What’s going on there just blows me away. I’ve never been to either one but from a distance I always thought they had the rep of being laid back and mellow.

They are violating the intent of the Posse Comitatus Act
Section 1385, in 1878. Congress has also enacted a number of statutes that authorize the use of land and naval forces to execute their objective. The Posse Comitatus Act outlaws the willful use of any part of the Army or Air Force to execute the law unless expressly authorized by the Constitution or an act of Congress

What's unbelievable is the dismantling of the First Amendment:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

This is an outrage against democracy. If one group can be targeted, any group can be targeted and No One is Safe.

I talked to a friend over the weekend who said his (very liberal) daughter is leaving Seattle. All the craziness is just wearing her out. It's not just the anarchists but the homeless people, the crime, the endless PC debates, etc.

Can't think of any reason to go to Portland, ever.

anarchists. organized criminals. armed militants. Wher are the mayors? the Governor? the senators?
Send in the Feds!
I think the opposite. Pull the police and any federal officers and let the idiots burn the whole place down. They don't want the police so let them see what it's like with NO law and order. So ignorant; they are NOT "demonstrators," they are domestic terrorists. And make the governor, mayor and all state officials phone numbers public. The 911 calls can go directly to them.

It's sad that we live in a world where people are allowed to destroy public and private property in the name of protest.

It's even sadder to me that most of these people will not be the ones to clean up the mess they have created or bear the cost of rebuilding the property that they have destroyed.
Amen, sister. My oldest son lives outside of Portland and I wish he would get the hell out of that armpit.

They are Federal Agents not the military. It doesn’t apply in this instance.

They empowered these rioters, I’d say let it burn and not give them one red cent.

There is video of a line of women, arms linked and chanting, being flash banged. They are offering their bodies to protect protestors (not rioters or looters) outside a government building. Heavy handed handling of a non violent situation does nothing to bring about calm. On the contrary it enflames the resentment. Whoever was there in charge of the troops(?) missed an opportunity to de-escalate the tension. One wonders what their orders were.

I agree-that is why the government is using them. They are violating the spirit bot not the actual law.

Hardly, Federal law enforcement can and do protect Federal property and arrest violators of Federal crimes. This isn’t something new, threaten or attempt to bomb a Federal Building, you’ll get the idea in a hurry how serious it can be.

When I lived a few miles from Seattle (1990 - 2008) it was a peaceful, friendly city, very liberal, we used to joke that it was Berkeley North. The same was true at that time in Portland. In fact, Portland seemed boring to me, as nothing ever happened there. Book shops, flower events, etc.

Apparently things have changed in both places, and not for the better. I am very sorry to hear it, as I always considered both cities the best that America had to offer.

Why did you address this post to me many hours after you first wrote it?
I was going to write a response to your post about democracy, etc. under siege. Then I thought better of it and deleted it. Must have still hit "Post reply" with an empty message.

I agree with you. The correct response in Portland is to let the city destroy itself and drive out its legitimate businesses and law-abiding citizens. Let the leftist loons have it. I saw the governor of Oregon and the mayor of Portland on TV last night and all I can say is that if you are willing to live in a state run by radical leftists, you deserve whatever happens.

Both cities offer insights into how far-left local governments "improve" things. Berkeley's crime rate is now about twice the national average.

These ongoing protests and riots are going to prove to be counter productive, the longer they last. Demeaning the police is already leading to many cities experiencing officers leaving the force, or calling in sick. This can only benefit the criminals, and result in even worse living conditions for those in the poorer sections of those cities. Continued rioting and property damage will only result in fewer businesses and stores reopening, leaving employment and shopping opportunities even worse for those living in these stricken areas.
