How important to you is your computer?

Considering that when we were kids only banks and NASA had computers, how important is your computer?
How would you rank it in your list of possessions?

I lost my wallet with all my credit cards, two weeks ago. It was like putting my life on hold without those cards. I don't even want to think about loosing my computer. Oh, No, No. No.

Losing your wallet and credit cards, maybe your driver's license, insurance cards and all that seems scary enough to me (considering the potential for identity theft and all that), I hope you were able to get everything closed, replaced and resolved.
I'd agree about the computer, losing it to theft could land you with the same issues as the wallet with everything in it.
But you're talking about the loss of a computer-ie, inaccessibility to you and its effect on your life. As you say, it'd be a loss of communication, information gathering, social gatherings, all we use our computers for. I also use my computer for online banking, paying bills, some shopping so that'd be a loss too.

Additionally I use my laptop for a side gig (retirement is my main job) as an editor for a medical continuing education company, so loss of the computer would mean loss of an income as well.

I survived without a computer for most of my adult life, finally bought one a month before I retired in 2011 I didn't really know how to use,was trial/error as I learned to surf the web
I got rid of the computer last yr,now have a laptop
I use it twice/day to see what happened overnight in the world,ck my emails with family&friends, come here to SF
I never do online banking, food shopping, because after being a victim of Identity Theft{before I had a computer} I'm very cautious which sites I go to

I fell in love with the internet with Web TV and when I finally bought my first computer in the mid 90's I had no clue what do do with it, or even how to turn it on without a book manual. What? I said to the guy on the phone...it comes without a book? "Yes" he said, "you have to turn it on first to find the instructions". That's when I packed it up and took it back to the store only to be told, there will be a half the cost "restocking charge".
A very long story made short, is I learned how to use it for what I wanted.
Back in the day with my Web TV and I was still smoking, I could smoke a whole cigarette before it ever loaded. Thank goodness for the glass of wine with it.
