How much is your license plates cost a year?

wish mine were that cheap. I paid $135 last time for the little one inch sticker. its good for two year I think.

I'm a non - American, so can you explain why you pay annually for licence plates in the USA ? :)

we have tags/license plates on our cars/trucks that have a little one inch sticker with the year on it... every two years we have to give the MVA money... a tax or fee you can call it... for the rest of our lives while we own a car. And we pay for emissions testing every two years on our cars... $10... another fee or tax our government imposes on us... taxed on everything here in America.... they tax us twice for things like tires and motor oil... once when we buy them, again when we dispose of them.

It varies a lot from state to state. When we moved from Washington State to Maryland, we were shocked at how much higher that fee was.

Welcome to Maryland. They even have a rain tax. Yes they taxed the rain. They may have got rid of this tax, but I have my doubts. its Maryland.

In PA, they did away with the registration sticker that goes on the license plate in 2016. We pay $38.00 per year for vehicle registration. Have the option to pay for 2 years instead of annually.

No emission testing in my county. Only 25 of the 67 counties in PA require emission testing based on population and proximity to major metro areas.

I'm thinking this could be what you're describing.
In Manitoba....we have what is called Auto Pak.....MPI.
Can also get this insurance through private companies....i think.
All depends on the coverage you want, age of your vehicle, whether it's high risk theft.
I have a 2014 Chev Trax.....a small SUV.
My Auto Pak insurance is just over 1200.00 a year, i know this seems high, but guess what.....it's in the high risk theft.
My drivers license is 35.00 per year.
So if an accident occurs, our insurance pays for repairs, less a deductible.

In Missouri, our "tags" run about $28 a year...we have to get a new tag every 2 years. Plus, any vehicle over 10 years old must have an Inspection, before a new tag can be applied for. The inspection cover the basics like working lights, brakes, tires, etc.

thanks for the explanation. We get our licence plates when we buy the car, nothing has to be paid for after that... ( yes we're taxed on most things here, but only when we buy them)

we have to have an inspection every 12 months for any car or vehicle over 3 years old , known as an MOT ( Ministry of Transport)... where a fail on any moving parts, and or emissions, will render you off road until it's fixed and re-tested.. ..in Spain it's called an ITV (Inspecciòn Tècnica de Vehiculos )

Is your licence plates free in England?
Absolutely free... they come with the car when we buy it.. no extra to pay for licence plates.. . The only time we would pay for a licence plate is if we chose to have private plates.. but even then it's just a one off payment

We however, have to pay a Car Tax every 12 months and the tax is decided on the size of your engine..the bigger the engine the higher the tax... for example a 1.4 engine like my little Ford, is £135 .. a big engine like my o/h 4.2 litre costs £600 per year...also we have one of the highest taxes on fuel in the world at the pump

Thanks for the welcome. I am not new to MD, lived here for many years before moving out west, and have been back now for over 12 years. But I must admit, I never heard of a rain tax.

OTOH, the job market is (in normal times) very good here. So I guess people can afford the high car registration fees.

I heard about the proposal of rain tax but don't know if it has passed. I couldn't find anything about it from my property tax bills.

Here in California it depends on a number of things, the age of the vehicle, the original cost of the vehicle, the size of the vehicle and the type of engine. Generally a new car will usually cost more than $200 to register and sometimes more. Each year that amount goes down. For non-electric vehicles (including hybrids) one needs to get a smog check every other year which costs between $50 and $100. If you don't pass you have to get your car or truck fixed and tested again. Most testing sites test free after the first failure. Larger, heavier vehicles are much more expensive to register due to the damage they do to the roads.

I don't mind the cost of registering vehicles here because it does improve the condition of the vehicles in the area and does encourage people to choose smaller, less ecologically damaging vehicles.

Ahhh, Good old Ca. Back in the old days, tag fees dropped every year your car aged. Then, sometime in the 80's I think it was, they did away with that idea. I know because the first year I tagged my old 79 chevy truck, (1987) the plates cost 45 dollars. When I left in 94, the renewal fee for the same truck was going to be 135 dollars. 😲 Needless to say, the truck got tagged in Arkansas for 27 bucks. (these days, $28). I read somewhere that Ca. did away with that setup later on. Now, they are even more confusing as they have added a bunch of other fees to the tag process. Had to dig around to find the info. The only thing I remember was my motor home at the time (a 1978 Southwind 26') was going to cost me $1100 to tag. Fortunately, I was heading for Ar.

The vehicle license fee (VLF) is 0.65% of the purchase price for the first year after purchase, decreasing to 0.0975% by the 11th year. So if you paid $20,000 for a new vehicle, the license fee would be about $130 in the first year. The fee would decrease every year until year 11, when it would be about $20. After that, the fee remains constant. in addition to the registration fee ($58), California Highway Patrol fee ($25), Transportation Improvement Fee ($25 to $175 depending on the value of the vehicle), and various fees imposed by local governments. Only the VLF is tax-deductible.

$150. for my 2005 Honda. It has less than 35,000 miles on it, so I'm not about to get a new car, and pay several hundreds of dollars, a year,
to register it.

No yearly charge for plates in Texas.

Only pay for license plates for a vehicle once in Texas ... when you buy it. Over the years, after 7 maybe? .. they decide that you need new plates, and then they send them to you FREE of charge.

The inspection tag is yearly here though, and that is something like $25. I just got a new car at the end of the year, so I get 2 years before I need to bother with that.
