President Donald Trump has paid tribute to his "best friend" and youngest brother following his death at 71.

"It is with [a] heavy heart I share that my wonderful brother, Robert, peacefully passed away tonight," he said in a statement on Saturday.

The president had visited his brother in hospital in New York the day before his death, telling reporters: "He's having a hard time."

It is unclear what caused Robert Trump's death.

A number of US media reports suggested he had been seriously ill.

"He was not just my brother, he was my best friend," Donald Trump said in a statement on Saturday. "His memory will live on in my heart forever."

President Trump's son Eric described his uncle as an "incredible man - strong, kind and loyal to the core".

"He will be deeply missed by our entire family," he wrote on Twitter.

remember folks, if replying to this , don't get into any political debate.. this is just news of the death of the American Presidents' brother!!..

I'm kind of puzzled as to why you felt it necessary to start this thread, Holly. It's been all over the news. As most Americans knew little or nothing about this brother (I never heard of him until his death got into the news), there's really nothing to say.

I don't know why I have to justify posting an item of news .. but I'm surprised that if Americans knew nothing of his brother why then ''it would be all over the news''.

I certainly knew he had a brother, so I would have thought if we knew here in the UK, then you would have known in the USA.. However , this is also news to the rest of the world even if you feel that you personally wouldn't wish to know about it..

It was all over the news because he was the president's brother. But I suspect that like me, most Americans never heard of him until now, unless they have read Mary's book exposing the Trump family. He certainly kept a low profile, so there was no reason we should have heard of him.

Thinking back to other presidents who have lost family members, those news items are usually treated the same way. One article in the news section, sometimes on the first page, sometimes not. Announcements on the news programs and the Internet. Usually there's a photo taken of the family at the funeral. The death of a presidential spouse would probably be a bigger deal. I can't remember this ever happening (while that president was in office, that is).

I didn't say you have to "justify" your item, I just said I was puzzled about it. We can't discuss politics, and what other category would the Trumps fall under? I'm curious, nothing more.
