Back in the day, my mother used to put bottle tops, and even some smaller jars into the gap between the farmhouse door and door frame, and just trap it enough to allow you to twist and break the seal.Being able to open jars, bottles, cans etc. is becoming more and more of a challenge for me. I guess my hands aren't as strong as they used to be and/or they're making more stuff so kidproof that it's almost impossible to get things opened up.
If it wasn't for hubby I would probably ending up destroying some of the containers just trying to get the stuff out. LOL
Those old doors were tough enough to take the treatment, but a good idea I've discovered more recently is to break the air tight seal on a jam jar by tapping the metal top edge with a heavy table knife, (dull side), in a circular pattern, right around the circumference if necessary. It usually breaks the seal, so its easy to turn thereafter, though you can get a tool to grip the metal top, and allow more purchase too!
