What Have You Lost The Ability To Do Now You're Older ?

Hmmm......Now please don't laugh, I've given all those gorgeous women (the world over) that lust after my body their marching orders. It's not that I can't do the deed anymore, it's just that they always steal and scoff my 'Rolos' when I'm not looking, plus the fact that they leave mountains of toe-nail clippings on my sofa. 😊

Not able to lift or carry as much as I did but I will try and can be very determined, hence the aches and pains the following day. :giggle:
Don't drive as much now as I've lost confidence and night driving is a no no although I do have a pair of night driving glasses that dim the headlights from oncoming cars. (They are yellow tinted).

See & hear. Lost vision in one eye so it limits how comfortably or wellI do many things. I’m trying to accuse DH of not speaking up while talking to me. If nothing else, it’s forcing him to get extra words in per day. Too bad that’s not something required by your Fitbit.

Sleep. Just gets worse & worse.

What can't I do anymore? SLEEP!!! I used to sleep like I was in a coma

I usually fall asleep within a couple minutes, sleep like a corpse for 5 hours, then gotta hit the restroom. After that, I'll be lucky to fall back asleep.

Edit: I got heavy(obese) after my divorce(mid 90s), I gave up the idea of ever running again. At 290 lb.s I had a hard time tying my shoes, getting down on the floor was a huge chore. Fast forward: after several years of intermittant weight loss, finally got down to normal weight, working out at the gym + Yoga + martial arts and now I can run again, can kick a person in the head if I have to, and overall feel much better in my late 60s than I did in my mid 40s.

My capabilities went gradually:
- When I was 62, I was still going down to the courtyard where I worked and doing regulation chin-ups with the Marines in sets of 10. By the time I was 72, that was down to sets of 5. Now, I cannot do any because of rotator cuff surgery. I don't do pushups in sets of 20 anymore. I am down to sets of 2.
- My balance is not what it used to be. I was never very good at Yoga, and it is even more difficult for me. My reflexes are not what they once were either. I gave up my motorcycle when I was 75.
- I used to run, but had to give that up around 67, and setting a treadmill on a steep incline and walking brought different problems, so I stick to 4 degrees or less these days.
- My weight has remained pretty constant for the last 40 years, but I attribute that largely to my wife's cooking.
- My eyesight is steadily getting worse. By 74, close-in fine-grain work was almost impossible, and driving at night is something I dread.
- I used to be able to sleep anywhere, and anytime. Show me some cardboard boxes in a ship's storeroom, and I have a place to catch a nap. Now, a four hour stretch is a treat. And I always take note of where the restrooms are.
- This prostrate cancer hormone treatment has zapped my energy level and stamina. Hopefully, my "mojo" will return in about ten more months. I also cannot tolerate heat like I used to, especially when I am having a hot flash.

Mentally, I seem to be about the same. I took a comprehensive IQ test a few months ago and that has not changed since I was 17. I am probably a lot more patient with people these days. My taste in movies and books has changed, and that might be one of the side effects of these powerful hormone shots. Drag out a romantic movie and I am good to go.

My last hormone shot comes next week, and while I already know what it will do and how it will affect me, I am rather excited to get it and get closer to the finish line. Being on this stuff for over two years is not pleasant.

"Age" has imposed some restrictions on my physical activity also....a bit of arthritis in the left leg/hip. I have had to learn to slow down and move more carefully, and not to rush. Getting down and back up after doing something like changing the oil in one of the vehicles or tractor often requires me to grab onto part of the vehicle to get back up. But, so long as I remember that I'm not a youngster anymore, I can usually manage to do just about anything I want to.

Alas, I can no longer play on the beach in my bikini.
I can no longer work 3 jobs. Well, I CAN but I'd be pretty tired.
I can still do everything. I feel younger and younger every day.

Ferocious, the ladies do love chocolate, you know.

You are so right dear lady, I have been living under the silly assumption that the many seductive ladies that have sat with me on my sofa, making suggestive movements with their lips and mouths, were in fact just enjoying gobfuls of my chocolate. Thank you for putting me wise. 😊

I'm no longer able to do close up work without getting my reading glasses and it bothers me almost every time because I usually get my tools out, start to do a job and then realize I can't see well enough to do what I need to do and have to get my readers. At least I keep them where I know I can find them.

As we get older many of us lose the ability to do certain things

For myself i/v lost the ability to do almost everything that requires any physical exertion.
As little as 5 years ago I was living and 'building' homes in the remote Northern Alaskan wilderness
now I have trouble grocery shopping or doing the laundry.
...actually like you said it does effect even the
will to do anything.

It's the opposite for me .. got to remove glasses to do close-up work. Yet I need glasses for distance and separate computer glasses.

Re: not being able to pull myself up from the floor

I think it was sometime 2016 when I was at my heaviest at 125 lbs. I got down on my knees to get an item on the shelf at Walmart and eekkk...I couldn't get up!!!. A young store associate pulled me up. It was embarrassing. I'm 10 lbs lighter now and at ease with squats.

Wouldn't expect everyone to post their ages but my experience was that, at 60 the decline in ability was quite gradual, even through my early 70's. Still able to walk well for fairly long distances, use the chainsaw without trepidation, etc. From my mid 70's 'til now (pushing 87) the decline has become quite rapid. I hardly want to pick up the chainsaw, even if it's not running. Afraid I'll lose my balance and fall on the "teeth". 😦

Although driving on local streets and expressways doesn't bother me, I don't have the vision for night driving. And walking without my cane is a challenge even on level ground. I can't believe the difference 10-15 years make after you pass into your mid 70's. I wasn't prepared for it and thought that I'd be in reasonably good shape "forever". Guess I was wrong, at least in my case.

Actually Dave, knowing people's ages ( not that anyone has to state their age)..is very helpful for those of us younger seniors, it helps to know , although not everyone is the same I accept that.. what we might have to look out or prepare for as we go through different stages of our senior years..thank you

That must be quite a shock to the system for you to have such a change in just 5 years :(

As I've gotten older I seem to have lost the ability to tolerate drama. There are a couple people who don't even talk to me because I've been...well, shall we say less than sympathetic. There are so many real and serious issues in life, why do people need to invent and embellish?
