Would you choose to be immortal if offered the chance to be?

Let's say that somehow, aliens, technology, God, you were given the opportunity to be immortal, but you couldn't reverse that decision would you choose to be?

Let's say the offer allows you to choose the age and body you're immortal in and that if you were to be damaged or obliterated in such a way that you would need a new body you would be resurrected in a body similar to the state of your body shortly before your body was affected in such a way.

For me I'm not sure I'd choose to do it. It's a strong draw but I'm not sure that I would want to continue living throughout the years as humans moved forward or regressed and modified the state of the world. Also one would lose all of the people one knows now as they died off and one would continue to live. It could end up being a very painful existence especially if you were to eventually meet a partner who seemed to be the ultimate partner.

I'm interested in what other people think. Would you choose to if there were slightly different rules than the ones I made up but not with my rules?

Years ago there was a movie called The Highlander where a man is immortal. There is a scens where his loved wife of many years has died, and he is no older. He sets fire to his home and in the background Queen is singing, "Who wants to live forever?"
I think that pretty well sums it up.

Hey, that all sounds good on paper! Who did you say would be makin' the offer? Maybe that guy with horns and a tail...🤣

but you couldn't reverse that decision

Hmmm, I don't like those kind of deals...

Love the idea behind, based upon the imagination side of your way of thinking, Asp!

This is a tough one. For years I have said that I would love two lifetimes afforded to me, with the first encompassing the hard-work, the stresses, the drive, the energy, and the dreams, with the second-half of life extending a chance to fine-tune all that one wasn't able to accomplish in the first-half of their lifetime.

For instance, working hard through life's first half, then getting to enjoy the fruits of ones labour all through the second-half... having a nice home that's all finished and complete, having untold amounts of money affording one to do as they so please without feeling the pinch, and embracing all that the world has to offer that one missed out on during the first portion of their life, having been a slave to their work/employment, etc.

It's fun and most interesting pondering the idea of, and while I may not accept the offer to be immortal forever, I do think I would quite like living for 200 years.

This topic makes me think of Duncan MacLeod, from the television series, Highlander.

Sure if the guy I was with was immortal too. Early 30's would be good. Old enough to know some stuff but young enough to still fit in with a younger crowd. Yes, you would lose your family but think of how many friends you could have (especially if they were immortal too.

When I was young and mistakenly felt the world could be mine if I lived in the future with the ability to change destiny then I remembered the man who struck Christ and was cursed to live among man for an eternity.

Same curse of the vampire if one believes such.

No. There could be no guarantee that the world would even be fit to live in forever. No guarantee that my health would forever be good, and I might spend the rest of eternity in pain or feeling miserable. And, I wouldn't want to keep losing the people I love over that time. What if the world were destroyed to the point where I would be left here alone, forever? I believe in quality over quantity. I'll live this life the best I can and be satisfied with that.

Looks like the overall answer is no. Although, if I continue as I do at this moment in time, not 1 second ago, not 1 second in the future, yes it might be nice .

But then reality sinks in :(

No, IMO death and the passing of the torch to a new generation is a necessary part of living that helps to support growth and change in our society.

"The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish." - Charlie Chaplin in The Great Dictator

Well, my answer would depend on whether I was going to be the only immortal person or one of a group. Which scenario are you imagining, asp?

Well if you can pick the people you love to hang around for the ride and throw time travel in the mix it to hit the historical highlights and avoid the yuck, I might go for that...

asp3, LOL, some days I am ready to swear that you have been eating too many of Keesha's Brownies.

Catch me on 2fer Tuesday. If the offer was extended to both my wife and myself I'd be in. Just me...I don't know. Seeing my wife younger and without the physical limitations she has now would really be something. If she declined the offer, but I accepted, I would at least be able to always take care of her during what time she had remaining.

Did somebody mention Brownies???
