Purity of Hollywood and Deadly Deception of Big Tobacco

It amazes me how Hollywood avoided simple facts of life yet disguised and promoted the potential affects of tobacco related products. Perhaps we shouldn't believe everything we see and hear on tv, facebook, movies or in the local paper? Truth is people react to internet propaganda, tv and news paper headlines as if they were the gospel truth.

Not everything is as it seems.

Somehow I never thought of Hollywood as "pure". As far as big tobaccos goes, I hope the cool, menthol taste of cancer rots their bodies. No, you can't blame them when the medical effects of smoking weren't known. But when they had scientific proof of tobacco's cancer ability, their ads had guys playing doctors singing the wonders of smoking. Yeah, their economic livelihoods were at stake, but they chose greed over people's lives. It was MY choice to smoke, not theirs. I accept the results of my decisions. Yet, to deny the known cancer causing data in their ads, for profit, is unjustified.

So Hollywood is to blame for not being a 'watchdog', rather than the tobacco companies that lied and covered up the truth for years?

"Hollywood" is a town where movies are made, not some monolithic entity that somehow makes decisions for shaping the perception of society.

To be clear! I was comparing Hollywood's goody goody two shoes take on tv married couples sleeping in twin beds as opposed endorsing tobacco products as seen in early tv and films. That's all. To me it ironic that early tv and movies covered up the fact married couples slept in thee same bed. That's what's strange. As far a big tobacco goes. it was cash cow funding teachers pensions and everything else. Who can deny an investment that payed out so well? Perhaps tobacco is addictive and a sure shot people smoking would continue to do so. The media does shape opinions and ideas why do you think the Rodney incident prompted the LA Riots? It was on the tv news , you can't tell me the reaction were accidental.

Another example of mass hysteria was brought on by a live rendition of the War of the Worlds, Remember?

Everyone, some more than others. lives are impacted by the media. Just like the media presents us we are human status symbols portraying our likes and dislikes like colorful peacock. Not everyone of course but we do each carry a specific style called individuality. I don't know how I got on this subject, but there you are meaningless garble

I believe that the smoking/cancer link was not widely known during the "twin bed" era of movies/TV. The fact is, up until the 70s or so it seemed like there were more smokers than non-smokers. Movies that depict an earlier time include smoking because it was a "period" thing.

Personally I don't make life decisions based on what I see in the movies.

My parents slept in twin beds, I just thought that was normal. Later, they had their own bedrooms, by that time I was in my teens and thought that was...strange. After they divorced, I understood what all the sleeping apart was really about.

Media does indeed shape people's perceptions and opinions, it's scary that so many can't tell the difference between fact and opinion(or don't care) . The Rodney King LA Riots were sparked by the acquittal of the white police officers by an all white jury. I guess the media could have just not reported that, but then that would have been a cover-up(censorship) of relevant, current news. That is not something I want to see going on, in this country.

I stream movies from Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu too many useless commercials otherwise. Things are different today than yesterday. Human nature remains the same. Go figure?

Yes, that's true and they promote unbridled use of alcohol, too. Alcohol in the USA is a big business that many are now dying from, too.

Well, I can think of at least one night they didn't sleep in separate beds.......

Product placement helps fund movies. Money buys influence. Diamonds were not the ubiquitous gemstone for engagement rings before they were promoted in movies that I watched as a teen.
