Blankets, duvets, quilts, comforters... it's that time of the year

I just got my new mattress, it is still rolled up in the bag.

It says to unroll and let sit for 24-48 hours. This is going to be difficult for me, as I have nowhere else to sleep. I dug around online and it says that sleeping on it early won't really hurt it, it only might void the warranty.

I was thinking of unrolling it on my bed tomorrow morning after I get up, then it would have 16-18 hours to expand til I go to bed tomorrow night.

Any comments from the peanut gallery? -- other locations of course are also welcome. :giggle:
I have a Tuft & Needle mattress. Not a word was mentioned about sleeping on it too soon. I took it out of the box, positioned it on top of the box spring, snipped the plastic bag, unrolled it and let it settle for a couple of hours. Slept on it that night. Five years and still going strong.

I don't know what that is about being too heavy and hard to move alone. I don't find it heavy or hard to move.

Oh. You don't have to use a box spring. I did because it was already there and I didn't want to spend the money for a platform. For that matter, you can put it on the floor if you want to.

About the blankets-duvets-quilts-comforters...right now I use a waffle weave cotton blanket. If I get chilly, I pull up the comforter. If Santa asks what I want for Christmas, I'm going to ask for a weighted blanket. It's said that they promote good sleep. I'm all for good sleep. DGD has one and she swears it helps her get to sleep and stay asleep.

Ok, interesting. I guess I will put it in place in the morning just to be safe.

I have a box spring and will put the new mattress on top of it, replacing the old one.

My only problem with the mattress-in-a-box is the odor that hangs around for a few days. My experience was that it goes away in a couple of days but I just couldn't stand it until then.

As far as blankets, I love a nice cotton "thermal open-weave" blanket for year-round. Pull it up, throw it off, pull it back up, throw it back off again...….. I get hot and cold all night. The Spousal Equivalent is like a furnace. Skinny as a rail but he throws off heat all night. It's like sleeping with an electric blanket on high. I make him stay on his side of the bed......most of the time 😉.

and if you nap on top of a chenille spread, you're likely to wake up to a long lasting case of "chenille-face"!
HAHAHAHA. Yes you certainly did so if someone asks you if you had a nap 😴 , best not lie. 😅Lol.
I actually remember that imprint. That’s funny.
Chenille face! LMFO!!! 😂

When the weather turns colder in November, I will pull out the "magic afghan," knitted by the great aunt of a friend. It is a knitted marvel. Think fisherman sweater. Multiple styles. And here's the thing. It's magic because everyone in my family is drawn to it. The dogs, in fact all our dogs over the years, love it. When it comes out on the sofa, the dogs immediately claim it. And it's warm, and snuggly, and perfect. We have enjoyed it for many, many years. I'm guessing it was made with Red Heart Yarn and will last and last.

Oh, wow, I know exactly what weave you speak of when you say fisherman's sweater, Carol!

So lovely having something close to your heart from someone special.

i wish they made a polar fleece fabric that TRULY stayed plush forever. polar fleece is almost impervious. it's pretty much solid... no spaces for air or liquids to get thru, or t least not easily. eventually it "pills" and feels rough. one layer is enough to keep you warm without much weight at all.

i once made a mattress topper from scrap shearling... from French Creek Sheep & Wool. i put it on mattress, fleece side up and then topped with fitted sheet. it was WAY to warm to use!

Dear husband and I both wear polar-fleece winter jackets, and I can't say a darned thing negative about it, so I imagine a polar-fleece blanket would extend the same.

what's "tog"?

‘The tog is a measure of thermal insulance of a unit area, also known as thermal resistance. It is commonly used in the textile industry and often seen quoted on, for example, duvets and carpet underlay. ... British duvets are sold in steps of 1.5 tog from 4.5 tog (summer) to 16.5 tog’

Love everyone's stories related to their furry little friends sharing their beds with them!

How sweet is that, your newly adopted pooch hopping-up onto your bed his very first night at your house!

He (his name is Henry) is a great big brown doggie, so I'm not sure he is a "little" furry friend. He's an older doggie and was SO grateful to get out of the shelter. He's very affectionate and likes to snuggle or sleep with his head on my chest sometimes. I got him last year after my Bonnie passed. I love him dearly.

Funny, but the only time he gets on the bed is when we are going to bed at night.

MickaC, I've read that memory foam mattresses are very hot to sleep on in the summer. Do you find that to be true?
No, i don't find them hot, i find they stay cooler than a regular mattress, and very comfy in winter.
That's me.
Have talked to some that do find them warm in summer.
I think it depends on the person.

Give him a pat and a kiss for me!

In summer, I switch between a thermal blanket and pillow shams for a shabby chic and my duvet cover. I haven't slept in my bed for a long time. I found I'm more comfortable in my recliner. My bed is an old Soma (cylinder) waterbed with mattress and tempurpedic toppers. I really need a new bed but it would have to be adjustable.

Update from the only guy on this thread(?):

Ripped the old mattress off and unpacked the foam mattress this AM and put it on the box spring.

Notes: It expanded within minutes. It did not get noticeably heavier than before it expanded. If anything it's a little light cuz it slides around on the plywood I have on the box spring (it's been there for 30 years). The old mattress was much heavier and did not move around.

It may or may not be a problem, but if it is I'll get some kinda rubber mat to put under it. Looking forward to sleeping on it tonight.

It's 2" higher than my old mattress, I hope my old cat can still jump up on it. He has arthritis I think so we'll see.

A sheet and light quilt in the summer (now), with a fan blowing on me. In the winter, I have the heaviest comforter I can find. I can hardly
wait, until February, when it will be cold enough to break out my new one. It's gorgeous, but is too heavy for more than three months,
out of the year. Wonderful to snuggle under, though.:)

Mattress report from the only man on this thread

:

It surely felt different from a traditional mattress. It will take a little getting used to, but nothing bad. It was nice not having to dodge broken springs poking me in the back.

My old cat got up with me ok, it seems. Another positive: It will likely be the last mattress I will ever have to buy. :)

Is the TOG listed on a label on the blankets or duvets?

Now I’m curious if the term is used in NA and I’ve just never seen it before.

Our climate is so variable that I layer. Summers I use a lightweight blanket and my duvet cover without a filler. When cooler weather eventually begins returning here, I put the lightest weight IKEA duvet filler in with a folded blanket at the foot of the bed. In November, I break out the electric blanket. It acts as a regular second blanket and I turn it on during colder snaps until January and the first part of February when I use it a lot.
