After vowing to abolish police, Minneapolis city council demands, "Where are the police?" as violence plagues the city

I thought nothing political is allowed. The Blaze is an extremely conservative publication founded by Glenn Beck. Before posting something like this, please perform your due diligence.

Though I didn't interpret you post as directed at me, I will respond about mine...

I didn't read the OP linked article (and don't know what the publication is), but instead responded from what I know locally. If my post was considered political, hopefully the moderators will remove it and I will refrain from the subject in the future, as I have been staying out of some other threads that seem to veer into that territory.

Edit: I have removed the contents of my previous post to avoid any further potential for political discussion.

Apropos defunding: Defunding does NOT mean taking all policing funds away from police departments/law enforcement, whatever you want to call it, which is the way it sounds (Who ya gonna call?). Defunding is a way to redistribute funds so that every call doesn't go to an officer in a squad car, sirens blaring...calls "sorted" to go to an officer (for want of a better word) who is specifically trained to respond to the kind of call. That is, a person having a mental/emotional crisis would be responded to in an entirely different manner than a person in the process of committing an armed robbery.

There would be funds available to pay for different kinds of "policing." I realize that's a simplistic explanation, but it's the best I can do. I hope you get it... What it amounts to is a matter of semantics, not a matter of refusing to fund needed services.

I would want a policeman or police lady, pronto to my home if I was hurt or husband was hurt or choking to death...nine 11

Also, I would call the police cause someone came into my house with a gun....Unless I kill the person first...with mine...

I will restate part of my earlier post, but only the hopefully non-political part.

My concern for the long term for Minneapolis (which affects me since I live just 4 blocks outside the city limits) is how they are going to rebuild the police department once they realize their mistake.

Think of it from the standpoint of being a potential employee of a company. Would anybody want to apply for a job with a company with a reputation for not treating their employees with respect and with the very real possibility that the job may disappear? Police are career people just like the rest of us with families to support, mortgages, etc. While for many police, it is more than "just a job", it is still the source of their income and therefore there are practical considerations as to where they choose to work.

Edit: Did folks here know that when three of the City Council members who vowed to disband the MPD received threats, they each hired a security guard at a total of $4500 a day at tax payers expense? Disband the protection for the city's population, but make sure we get what we need for our own protection at their expense. There is even more that may not have made the national news, but I don't know how far I can go in these forums.

"9-1-1. What is your emergency?"

"Someone is breaking into my house! Please send the police!"

"I'm sorry, the police department has been defunded and there are no more officers. I can schedule a crisis counselor to come to your house and mediate between you and the intruder, if you'd like. There is an opening next Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Would you like me to set that time?"

"BUT HE HAS A GUN!"

"In that case, I can schedule a social worker to meet with him and offer him alternate methods to obtaining the luxuries he desires. We are scheduling appointments in late November."

"No, I have a gun, too. I'll just shoot him and we'll straighten it out when the crisis counselor gets here on Tuesday. Thank you for your help." CLICK.

Thank you OP, also posts # 2, 3 and 12

GeorgiaX:Yes, Glen Beck is an idiot, anything he is involved with must be verified by other sources.

Goggle says: " Minneapolis City Council concerned with rising crime rate."

However, the source quoted was Fox News which is only one or two pegs up from Beck.

The 'Fake News' of our society makes one wonder, "Well, is that really true?"

Look, even in the Bizarro world of "woke" politics, it's only common sense that cutting back on police funding could lead to an increase in crime. Right?

The aspect of this "woke" thing that I don't get is this...

Somebody comes up with the concept, but if nobody pays it any attention, it would go nowhere. So what I don't understand is how or why people buy into this stuff and blindly follow it with no thought through it to see the problems it causes.

I have only recently been seeing this term "woke". At first it was just one reference, but it has been showing up in the media with rapidly increasing frequency. From what I have read, the term refers to being "awake" and ultra-sensitive to any possible perceived wrong doing, however slight. If that is true, then nobody could pass its muster since it is still true that "he who is without guilt can cast the first stone".

"Woke" means being aware of all the injustice in the world and being willing to do something about it. That's the theory. In practice it means, as you said, being hyper-sensitive to all slights, real and perceived.

I do live fairly close to Minnesota and we do get the Minneapolis T.V. stations on cable here.

That's one state and one city that I never expected the extent of the violence.

However. The councilors always try to get as many votes to be reelected so they play the game of trying to cater to the voters. They didn't say eliminate the police. They said to seek an alternative solution to the present police situation. Defund.
Of course the police union knows what that means and so it is entirely possible that they are playing the game as well.

It's sad.

I remember a situation in Canada in Halifax when the police went on strike and they just stood and watched as the yokels ran up and down streets speeding.

I'm afraid that the next thing we will see is stories of private security in wealthy neighborhoods similar to the private firefighters that were brought in to protect multimillion-dollar homes in California a year or two ago.
