snow! yay or nay?

i live in a 4 season area of NJ, though spring & fall are too short for me. i've been either a teacher or student pretty damn close to my entire life. whenever snow was in the forecast, we all did a "snow dance" before going to bed that night in hopes of a snow day!

this whole covid mess should eliminate the need to ever call school because of inclement weather again.

are you a snow bunny? i used to ski before age showed me it wasn't gonna happen anymore. not a competitive bone in my body. absolutely zero desire for anything remotely challenging. if this is a snowy winter, i'll enjoy it. a good snow day is being a slug, in sweats and my favorite, totally beat-up Blondo boots.

I love the snow. I used to downhill and cross country ski. I’ve snow shoed , tobogganed, and still ice skate.

Hiking in the snow is something we still do as well as playing in it and shovelling it. It creates beautiful scenery and looks magical with added Christmas lights.

The way I see snow is that it’s not something I can change but I can change my opinion about it so I do.

It does become a little bit tedious after the 1st of the year.

It helps that I live in an apartment where others deal with snow removal so I don't have to give it much thought.
 
Snow does nothing for transportation and vehicles.

The first day of snow here and we are supposed to be 'used to it' is chaos on the streets and highways. Cars ending up in the ditches and collisions are a repair mans dream and a nightmare for insurance companies and the police.

On top of that people ending up in emergency with heart attacks from shovelling or snow blower injuries.

Bears have the right idea. They hibernate for the winter.

I could take maybe a month of snow but from November to April there is still snow on the ground. It's a pain in the rear end.
 
Lots of weather up this way, love all the seasons. I will admit that things get somewhat tedious towards the end of winter.
Each season has its good and bad, too much snow or freezing rain is about the worst to me. In late spring, the black flies really work to turn you into a pin cushion. THE rest is all great.

I like snow in the mountains for the water supply during the summer. I dislike it in the valley where I have to walk and risk falling with every step. However, snow is very necessary.

A lot of “city” people don’t understand where water comes from, besides the tap, which amazes me. Water comes from snow and rain. And truly does run downhill, 😂. When northern Utah gets a lot of rain, southern Utah can flood.

Snow when it melts, fills the lakes and reservoirs. Deserts, like Nevada, Arizona, Southern California buy their water from several other states Including Utah. When you really get to know the cycle of weather and water needs, it becomes very interesting. They should teach it in school.

I lived thru the infamous 'Blizzard of '77 that put my hometown,Buffalo,NY on the national map for couple weeks.In the yrs that followed,some winters have bone chilling cold,other not so much
I do enjoy walking in winter on a sunny day all bundled up,,especially if the sidewalks have been shoveled.I go outside if its not really windy{anything above 25 mph-forget it} or windchill isn't bad.I do get 'cabin fever' quickly if I can't go outside.Last winter was'mild',we got 70 total which is below the avg of 100.I'm hoping for another 'mild' one
One of the interesting things about living in WNY, in winter is how close you live to Lake Erie. When the winds whip across the lake,majority of the snow goes south of the city where the ski areas are located
 
when the forecast is for snow (and we're all gonna DIE), there are always emergency meetings of chapters of The French Toast Club. they are held in supermarkets.

this is a Jersey guy!


just an observation, but... those who complain the most about the white stuff on the ground are sometimes those who could just as easily hunker down and wait for roads to be cleared. but NOOOOO, some seem to have the need to join the throngs out on the road to show how much they also don't know about driving in the stuff.

original neighbors were both teachers, so there were 3 outta 4 (not counting their kids) who generally had no need to go anywhere till roads were cleared. they made home-made pizza. we had one of those "beer meister" tap things in basement. one BIG storm, snow was drifted up fronts doors so you couldn't open from inside! there we were, balancing cold pitchers of beer, right out of the keg. had to go out back door, over fence to get to our front yard, then back over their fence to get to their back yard to get in their back yard. worth it? Hell, yeah!

When I was younger, definitely. (of course, I had good reason to like it. Think tow truck and $$$). :) :)
Now, no thanks. I'm prepared for it as on occasion it does snow here, but it doesn't stay very long.
To me, what's worse is an ice storm. :mad: While pretty to look at, the damage can be unbelievable.
If I have enough advance warning of an impending snow storm, I'll close the house, hit the motor home and head anywhere south.

It very accurately sums up the folks that run out to buy bread, milk, and eggs!
