My first cold of the season. What did your Mom make for you when you were sick?

Milktoast. Ugh. Can`t remember what illness that was served for but I hated it. Tea and dry toast after a stomach bug-can`t drink tea to this day. My mom was a very "modern" mom-no old wives tales from her(unlike my MIL who had a million of them!) So the milktoast thing kind of baffles me...

Lots and lots of bed rest.

In addition to... a good rub-down using Vick's Vapo-Rub, cough medicine galore, even an ounce or two of warmed wine to help soothe our coughs, and when all else failed she'd make up a good old-fashioned mustard-plaster.

I used to partake in lots of television watching and reading.

The nickname for chicken soup,Jewish penicillin, probably got its start this way:)
I took care of a 90+ year old gent in a nursing home that said he would take a spoonful by mouth of the Vicks, swore it took care of what "ails you," personally, just the thought gave me the shivers!
I'm of Celtic heritage a good old fashioned hot toddy pretty much was the go to,which in turn gave a good nights sleep, which is generally what the body needs.

Oranges for a cold and the ever-popular rub down with Vick’s and wrapped in flannel sheet. My mom swore by a vinegar, honey mixture with which to gargle for sore throats... hated that one

Homemade chicken noodle soup with the homemade noodles.
Vick's Vaporrub on my back and front and she put a tsp of Vick's in my mouth, on the back of my tongue. (soothes the throat)
Homemade chicken noodle soup was the ticket back in the day, wasn't it? :)

I remember if word got around that a neighbourhood child was sick, and the child had no chicken noodle soup, someone would make a pot and bring some over to them.

That's why I have such a fondness for days gone by.

Vick’s Vaporub

Yep, slathered my chest with the stuff
Then, slapped my cap and coat on, and 'made for me' a way to school

I remember one poor little soul bein' fed alphabet soup.... for breakfast(?!)
I know this because he barfed it all up right after getting off the school bus
We all gathered around that glompy mess
Somebody said 'Hey! I can spell my name!'

Good times

My mother made chicken noodle soup via a recipe given to her by a Jewish friend. Delicious and healing. She'd also put a plaster of vicks on my chest and 1/2 of an adult aspirin. For breakfast it was oatmeal with honey and sliced bananas and a cup of hot tea with honey and lots of lemon. I'd be fine in no time.

My old Mom would make a "Mustard Plaster"....probably similar to Vicks Vape-O-Rub, today. The heat from that mixture would do a good job of helping a chest cold. She had all sorts of old traditional health care remedies.
