Governor in Utah has issued emergency COVID-19 order

Received a message on the alert system. Mandatory masks for entire state, kinda like closing the barn door after the horses have run off. The hospitals are overwhelmed with COVID-19 cases. So, if you are old and need hospitalization, probably not happening.

Of course, my hip replacement surgery will be canceled. The governor is supposed to speak tonight so I don’t know if we will lockdown. I will be surprised if we go into lockdown. We prefer to have the virus and die in droves. It’s the American way. Stupid people.

Utah leaders, as I understand it, has been reluctant to impose any restrictions regarding this virus. If that's the case, the people are now paying the price. IMO, until this virus is under control, masks, when out in pubic, should be mandatory, and large gatherings should be strongly discouraged. In our area, most of the problems can be traced to people ignoring these suggestions.

With the way these cases keep rising, I don't think it will be very long before there is a National mask mandate, and another round of closures, and another spike in unemployment, etc. However, I doubt we will see any worthwhile changes in the rules until late January, next year.

There was a mask mandate in Salt Lake County almost since the beginning. Then there was a mandate in Utah county. In the beginning there was a lockdown, and then everything reopened. Then children went to school and the virus started to spread like wildfire. As I said, stupid people.

Lock down, masks, hand sanitiser and good hygiene are effective and if people are co-operative, can bring the number of daily new cases down quite effectively. However, the most important things to keep in mind is social distancing, especially indoors, and effective testing and contact tracing. I took a test 2 weeks ago because I was feeling unwell quite suddenly and I had the result back by text the same day. It was negative. If it had not been, I would have had to social isolate for 14 days and I would have received all necessary help to do this.

I live in NSW and the adjacent state of Victoria has had a hard time getting on top of COVID 19. It has taken more than three months of personal sacrifice by citizens but in the end it has been worth it. Today is the 11th consecutive day of zero new cases and zero deaths and the number of active cases has fallen to just four.

I don't think Americans prefer to contact COVID 19 and die in droves but this is the inevitable consequence of valuing personal liberty over concern for the welfare of others. Personal liberty is deeply ingrained in the American psyche, less so in us Aussies. For this fundamental difference it will be necessary to convince people that community action, with everybody playing their part, is not only the wise way to go, it is also the most compassionate.

If you have symptoms get tested multiple times. I tested negative 3 times before finally testing positive. I had symptoms and new I had been in contact with an infected person so I
kept getting tested. If you get tested too soon you don't have enough viral load to show on a test but you can still spread it.

Yes, I am aware of the limitations of testing but that is not a reason not to be tested at all. More testing is better than insufficient programs.

One reason I did not have a second test is that in NSW the number of cases in the community is now very low and I still stay home except for necessary excursions. I still wear a mask on Public transport and at the supermarket. What I actually had was a very heavy head cold so I wasn't about to leave the house to give my germs to others. I've been self isolating for the past 2 weeks but not because of COVID.

Data from my state, NSW, today is 5 positive tests in the last 24 hours, only one is from an unknown source. The others are either people in quarantine or found through contact tracing. Currently we have 38 active cases, only one of which requires hospitalisation. Once the numbers are this low it is much easier to keep things under control while not being complacent about the possibility of a second or third wave of infection.

I really am ashamed at how so many Americans have distorted the idea of personal liberty into an excuse for self indulgence. If one stops to think, many laws on the books limit personal liberty in some way and those same maskless people will obey them either for the greater good, or to avoid punishment. And may consider actually complying as a weakness because they lack confidence in themselves.
They ridicule and scoff at science because they don’t understand the scientific processes of study and investigation. It’s not perfect but it’s the best tool we have. And good tools have to be adapted to the job at hand, not discarded if they don’t work right away, or are misused in unskilled hands.
They make me very angry because they can still endanger those who are trying use who are trying to use the best available techniques to stay well.

Exactly, which is why I say that Americans choose to die. If you choose to live you put a mask on, wash your hands, social distance, and follow the guidelines. Doing anything else, and you choose to die, and you choose to kill others. IMO.
