Hi Kath...I live in York, just across the river from you. I read that your husband is a retired Navy pilot. Are you willing to expand on his a career a bit? I am a retired airline pilot, so flying was/is my passion. Did he fly in Vietnam?

I am sorry that he is in Hospice care. I wish him well.

Welcome! Sorry about your husband. I was in the Navy (Destroyer Escort Group) during Nam. Made my first WesPac Cruise in Dec. 1968.

Thanks for your welcome! It was such a surprise to get a message from York - practically right next door! My husband had a 32-year career and flew in a number of capacities. He served all the way through the Viet Nam conflict. Mostly flew the P3C-Orion during that period. Prior to that, he was an instructor teaching the proper takeoff and landing procedures while serving aboard the carrier USS BonHomme Richard. He had his first heart attack in the 80's which nixed further pilot duties. He then went on to serve as head of the Navy Clemency and Parole Board until retirement. He always missed flying though, as you can probably identify with. Did you fly with one of the major carriers?

Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to fly during Vietnam. I tried to get into the Naval Academy, but too many applicants at the time, so the Navy and the Congressman in our area had their choice. I served in the Marines and many F-4's saved our butts coming off of the Constellation, Enterprise and I think the Saratoga and Forrestal (before the fire). A lot of ships came and went during that era and it was hard to keep up. I do remember the Bonn Homme Richard. I think they carried attack jets. The F-4's flew at about Mach II and got to us in a hurry. When they came in hot and low, you better have your head down. I was sorry to learn of your husband's illness. It is good that he is in Lebanon and close enough that you can visit him often. I wish you all the best. [h=1][/h]

When I was on the U.S.S. Robison (Guided Missile Destroyer), we escorted/plane guarded for the carrier Kitty Hawk, but the Bonn Homme Richard was one of the carriers that was in Nam when I was there. I remember watching Fighter Jets doing practice shooting runs over the water. Back then, carriers were called CVA's (Attack Carrier), but later, when they all became Nuclear powered, the were called CVN's.
