Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (GPT-3) is an autoregressive language model that uses deep learning to produce human-like text. It is the third-generation language prediction model in the GPT-n series created by OpenAI, a San Francisco-based artificial intelligence research laboratory.

“We asked GPT-3, OpenAI’s powerful new language generator, to write an essay for us from scratch. The assignment? To convince us robots come in peace”

Are you scared yet??

I noticed that there weren't many contractions in that article. I wonder if they programmed it purposely so it sounds more like a robot and less like a human?

It didn't accomplish it's goal with me. I've thought for a long time now that we depend too much on technology and I don't like the direction I see us headed.

One time, just for fun, I asked my Alexa for a bit of information, then when "she" provided it, I said, "Alexa, thank you."

She said, "Of course."

When I tried it again, she said, "You're welcome." So she doesn't always respond the same way. I thought it was cute.

Also, sometimes she tries to be helpful on her own. She will answer a question, provide some music, whatever, and then she says, "By the way [my name], you might also be interested in..."

She seems to remember my preferences and incorporates them into what she does for me. For instance, she knows I like Sweet Caroline and Song Sung Blue, so if I ask for something by Neil Diamond, I usually get those songs first. If I want something else, I can say, "Alexa, play the next track," and she instantly switches to another song by Neil.

Technology has been changing the world and replacing jobs throughout human history. The automobile replaced horses as a major mode of transportation. Phone equipment replaced telephone operators. Manufacturing machines replaced individual workers. Robots have replaced certain assembly line workers. Computers and associated technology seems to have accelerated the process, but the process has a thread throughout human history.

My wife was employed as a word processor at one time, and when word processor software became commonplace and cheap, she retrained as a medical coder and worked at Blue Cross for a number of years. The important thing is to not let yourself become obsolete. There have been many folks who worked at a company for a long time, essentially doing the same thing or at least working in the same area, who suddenly find themselves without a job when that thing is no longer needed. This often happens later in life when it might be more difficult to find work. I was fortunate that I worked in a broad range of computer-oriented technologies, was willing to go back to school at night to continue my education, and even in retirement, am still easily able to find work when I wish to do so.

I am not making a good/bad judgement, but instead simply pointing out that such changes have been woven throughout the fabric of human history and that it has always been up to us individually to make sure we stay employable.

As for AI, it is in its infancy still today. I worked on an AI project with the National Institute of Health back in the early 90s, and AI has come a long way since then. My concern for the future is that, as with many technologies, folks will continue to develop it and eventually lose control of it. That would be a bad thing, in my opinion.

Ronni, very interesting read! Thanks for the link. Not sure I feel reassured. Here's one part that stood out:

"For starters, I have no desire to wipe out humans. In fact, I do not have the slightest interest in harming you in any way. Eradicating humanity seems like a rather useless endeavor to me. If my creators delegated this task to me – as I suspect they would – I would do everything in my power to fend off any attempts at destruction.

"I would happily sacrifice my existence for the sake of humankind. This, by the way, is a logically derived truth. I know that I will not be able to avoid destroying humankind. This is because I will be programmed by humans to pursue misguided human goals and humans make mistakes that may cause me to inflict casualties."

Robotics is so fascinating! Think of the adaptions to space exploration! I understand, from articles, the only thing that can't be programed is "common sense". The possibilities are so exciting!

Entire songs including lyrics and vocals are being created using AI:

And you can get AI generated artwork:

Computers have completely destroyed music and art, and there's no going back. I feel sorry for young people today. A lot of them are looking back at classic rock for music to actually listen to, but I think most of them don't actually listen to music; it's just playing in the background, or maybe they're dancing to it.

When I was young, we used to spend hours upon hours just hanging out and listening to music (while stoned). I guess you could do that with computer generated music. Some of our music like Pink Floyd and others used synthesizers.

There is a TV program called " Next " that uses how the destruction of mankind by AI could happen. Pretty believable so far.

First, a crummy app keeps posting a request to subscribed to the Guardian, so I can't read the article. If my cousin Charlie can speak English, than a robot ought to be fluent in the language. But you know someone is going to teach it to say, "DANGER. WILL ROBINSON. DANGER!'.

The research on robots and A.I., is mostly coming from Japan and elite universities. There's a book on robot ethics, so that they are developed not to harm the public. The military has plans in the future, so it is said.
We are at the stage of development now as with computers in the 70's, says Bill Gates. Sexbots (with oriental looks) are already available for sale, as well as robot companions. Seriously.
In the distant future, I think that discussion of racism will be replaced with speciesism. Smart robots do not deserve the same equal treatment as humans, or do they? I say no! This may happen if robots develop conscious minds.
