Judge: Parents must pay son back after purging porn ‘trove’

A Grand Haven couple must pay their 42-year-old son back after destroying the son’s extensive pornography and sex toy collection, according to a federal judge.

Paul and Beth Werking, of Grand Haven, were sued by their son David Werking after they destroyed his collection of DVDs, VHS tapes and other pornographic materials in 2018. The son estimates the value of his collection to be around $25,000.

I think the fact that it was pornographic materials makes this a much more "interesting" story than if he had left behind, let's say, sports paraphenalia or his stamp collection.

To me, the important question is whether the parents were required to provide safekeeping for all his stuff, after he was forced to leave "at the request of local law enforcement?" Huh?

What a legal entanglement this is. And I have a feeling there's a lot more to this story than what was presented in the article.

This reminds me of another court case where the mom destroyed her son's sex doll. He was taking this life size doll everywhere, to the movies, to the dinner table, to bed of course.

Mom finally snapped and whacked the doll's head off. She had to pay the cost of a replacement, well over twenty grand.
Guess that wasn’t such a cheap date for her son after all 🤔. But I love these whacky people stories...makes me feel better about my own mental status 😂😂😂

So my question is: how did the son establish with the court that his stuff was worth $25k? had he taken photos in advance, or keep purchase receipts?
The whole thing is comical, a 42 yr. old has an extensive porn collection, gets divorced(what a shocker) and moves in with his parents...really?
The parents must have crippled him in some way, emotionally or ? I got divorced when I was 42, but I had been on my own for 25 years! I would have slept in my car before going back to the parents.

I think the judge must have been presented written documentation, the emails.

quoted from article
[12 moving boxes of items of value shows intent to collect his posessions. Missing info from article did the parents give a written deadline for pickup or any indication they would destroy the contents in the boxes if not picked up?

According to emails between the father and son, the collection of items included 12 moving boxes “full of pornography plus two boxes of sex toys.” David Werking included an itemized list of the destroyed property, including 1,605 individual titles of pornographic DVDs and VHS tapes.

There is also a list of at least 50 sex toys and paraphernalia. He originally valued the items to be worth $28,940.72, but said many of the titles are irreplaceable. In later court filings, the items were listed at $25,557.89.]

While most would wonder about a 42 yr. old living with his parents and amassing a large porn & sex toy collection as really weird, the judge has to rule on value & agreements for return. Apparently the parents were wrong so the judge ruled in favor of the son.

The story has value in getting me to think about his collection as items of value not about the content of porn & sex toys.

Well, at least they didn't charge her with murder! 😁

The presiding magistrate ruled properly because just like urban street cops he more then likely recognizes whack job parents and fully understands why this guy is the way he is.

1. If he has vacated the address in question voluntarily or by legal eviction they have to notify him of their intent to dispose of any of his remaining property and if such is deemed illegal then they are required to notify their law enforcement agency.
2. I think the removal of what they deemed illegal pornography and secured it in their banks safety deposit box to spare the boy embarrassment speaks volumes about what the real issue was here. Kinda like drug deals gone bad.

Now they can slink back home with lost pride and lick their wounds.
