Hilaria Baldwin is not Spanish, as she has previously claimed

Oh mercy me, I'm clutching my pearls so hard that I can hardly type! A peripheral show biz personality (whom probably most of us have never heard of until now, myself included) turns out to have been born in a different location than the one she said. Oh, the horror! Will the evil in this world never cease?

Excuse me while I lie down and fan myself after being accosted by this revelation. I am just unable to utter another syllable about it.

Sigh. Unfortunately the thing of being from Spain (and other European countries) has sometimes been considered to be "better" than being born here in the U.S. or anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. Huzz has a friend who has a Hispanic/Latinx-sounding last name and is always quick to point out that his great-great grandparents came here from *Spain* back in the day, that they're not really Mexican or Central American or South American. (And IMO, only seems to be half-kidding.) And they say that for years, in Mexico and Central Amer. and South Amer. that those who can trace their ancestry back to Spain rather than a mix of Spanish and the "locals" (i.e., Native American or First Nations) consider themselves to be "better" than the "locals" or a mix thereof. And you know that Spain is not the only European country that this is done with.

Good ol' Homosapiens: always finding a way to look down on others, dontcha know? Sigh.

I always take celebrity statistics with a grain of salt. Hollywood "stars" from way back, have had made-up names, etc.

Nothing surprising.

What. An. Idiot. She has claimed for years to have immigrated from Spain. Liar liar pants on fire!

Typical character assassination piece from the media outlet well known for such.

Why is it "character assassination?" Hillary from Longmeadow, MA pretends to be from Spain for some reason, marries a B-list celebrity, is caught out and suitably mocked and scorned.

She's the one who told the lies, not the news media, although many outlets bought into the charade.

Her husband is a left-wing gasbag and that just makes the schadenfreude a little sweeter.

Well you just tipped your hand, that's the real thrust of the article, and answers your question.

Luckily, unlike your quoted news source, Ms. Baldwin's lie hurts no one.

No, it doesn't. She's the one telling the lies. Pointing out that someone is lying is not "character assassination", it's "reporting." And no one would care if she weren't married to a semi-prominent anger-prone leftwing gasbag.

Unfortunately, I know too well how sweet schadenfreude is. But I've for one have been trying to cut back on it. Like cutting back on refined sugar is physically healthy; seems like cutting back on the schadenfreude would be a healthy thing for human relations. So Hillary (love that first name!) whoever she is--I too had never heard of her--lied about where she was born; I unfortunately, from a moral standpoint, still lie about my weight sometimes, sigh. :sneaky:

Yeah, right. I'll remember that the next time someone complains about what Rachel Maddow has just reported about the outgoing POTUS, or some other lying right-wing gasbag.

No one on right or left should complain about accurate reporting about anybody.
Too bad though that too much of reporting, whether accurate or not, is taken up with unimportant things such as where someone was born or who someone's sleeping with (unless of course their partner, is not a consenting, non-closely-related adult). I don't care who ya are, that stuff's borrrrring.

I never heard of the person either, it does seem like a fib that doesn't hurt anyone and who cares anyway. But, I have a story of a person who wasn't from Spain either...it was a 7 yr old foster child who kept telling me she and her family lived in their castle in Spain. I figured it was childish imagination, but then months later there was a foster kids picnic and her siblings were there and it came up that their ancestors had a castle in Spain. It was funny but I could see how a small child hearing about it could get confused. Another foster child kept telling me she was from a particular different state (I forget now which one), but she didn't seem to know anything about that state, then a few months later we were driving down a highway through town and she got excited about there was her state, LOL it was a street that had the name of a different state.

Sorta kinda a similar situation with a friend of mine, who's also in her 70s. She was told as far back as she can remember, maybe 5 or 6, that they had Native American ancestry. Welp, just a few years ago, one of her cousins did some genealogy research and turns out not to be the case as near as they can tell. So Friend bring this up if someone starts badmouthing any famous person who's said that & then it's proven not to be the case; she says maybe that's why they were told from way back just like she was; you can't always blame somebody or call 'em a liar if they were told that for years. (Well, you can but seems like a waste of time, shrug.)

Sorry, I have found the Hilaria/Hillary Baldwin story to be most entertaining. It's not just where she was born (Boston) it's her now you hear it, now you don't Spanish accent, her chain of Spanish-themed yoga studios, her husband's stalwart defense of her faux-Spanish heritage. I agree she harmed no one, I just think the whole thing is funny.

The thing is, nobody really cares. And it sounds like very few if any of us have ever heard of her. If that's the worst thing they can come up with, it must be a slow news day. And it's on the level of schoolyard nastiness; what a surprise!

What's next? Tom Hanks' wife got a parking ticket? One of Dr. Fauci's daughters dropped her mask for a second, when she sneezed and had to blow her nose? Joe Biden's wife once voted for a Republican, 30 years ago? *

* I made these up, just to make a point.

More on Hilaria Baldwin from an unbiased news source:

Accusations of cultural appropriation

On December 21, 2020, Twitter user Leni Briscoe posted a tweet which read "You have to admire Hilaria Baldwin's commitment to her decade long grift where she impersonates a Spanish person"; the Twitter thread included a Today show video in which Baldwin seemingly forgot the English word for "cucumber".[6][44] The Twitter thread went viral and prompted a number of news articles on the subject and accusations of cultural appropriation.[45][46][47][48][49] The Cut stated, "There are a few discrepancies in Hilaria Baldwin's bio", noting the biography on her speaker site listed her as being born in Mallorca, Spain, and posting clips of Baldwin in which she speaks with varying levels of accents.[50] Writer Claire Lampen stated a post from Baldwin in December 2020 was "Conspicuously American, which – as certain internet detectives have since noted – marks a change from the Spanish accent she has adopted in past interviews".[50] Buzzfeed writer Natasha Jokic wrote, "Looking through Hilaria's tweets, it does seem like she's gone to great lengths to never explicitly say that she's Spanish – but she has gotten pretty close."[51] The Things stated that her cousin said Baldwin is "zero percent Spanish" and the family had only spent time in Spain for vacations.[52] The situation had Twitter users and members of the press comparing Baldwin to Rachel Dolezal, a white American woman who claimed to be of African-American descent.[53][54]

Response

Baldwin responded, via Instagram, on December 27, 2020, saying she identifies as white, and her ethnic background includes "many, many, many things".[55] She stated she spent "some" of her childhood in Spain and "some" in Massachusetts, but had never been enrolled in school in Spain, only spending time there during family holidays.[3] She stated she was born in Boston.[56] In an April 2020 podcast, she had stated, "I moved here [New York] when I was 19 to go to NYU"; when asked where from, she said "My family lives in Spain; they live in Mallorca",[57] and that "I came for school and I never, ever, ever left.
