Cars Are Getting Stranger & Stranger

Since I didn't have a birthday party last week, I decided to get my own present - a 2021 Honda Accord Hybrid Touring. I've never driven a hybrid before.
The manual is like a small phone book.
If anyone doesn't buckle their seat belt, there is not only an annoying chime, a woman's voice comes through the speakers & orders everyone to buckle seat belts. Just for fun, when I took my sister for a ride last night, she didn't put her seat belt on. Not only did the voice scare her, it kept repeating every few seconds until she buckled up.
There is no gas cap. You just stick the nozzle in & it closes itself when you pull it out.

If it's windy or raining, a woman's voice reminds you about bad weather - even when the radio is off - whether you want to hear it or not.

There is radar that keeps you from tailgating by applying the brakes if you get too close to the car in front of you & also if you're about to hit a pedestrian.

There are cameras that take photos of every speed limit sign as you drive. The backup camera also shows the ground right behind the rear bumper - to prevent those tragedies when parents back up over their small child they couldn't see. (That's a great safety feature)

There is a "Black Box" similar to a passenger plane that records the speed you were going just before an accident, whether the brakes were applied, & a whole bunch of other details. I guess that helps your insurance company decide who was at fault.

If you drift close to the lane lines, the steering wheel vibrates strongly, makes an awful groaning noise & brakes & steers the car away from the line. If a driver started to fall asleep, that would surely wake him/her up.

The gas tank is only 12.8 gallons, but goes over 600 miles. (That's my favorite feature)

I've had cars with heated seats, but this one not only has that, it also has a switch that cools the seats. LOL - who wants an overheated butt?

I haven't had time to go through the whole manual, so I'm sure I'll find more interesting features.

I just discovered another one. Most cars come with transmitters so you don't have to use the key to lock or unlock the doors. Some have a button on the door handle that you just push. This one has neither. All I have to do it put my hand near the handle & it recognizes MY hand after a few times & locks & unlocks all the doors without me touching anything. Talk about lazy! 😊

No more papers to sign. The Finance guy's desk has a big built-in I Pad & he just brings up every page of the document & the customer uses his stylus to sign everything. I don't get any printed documents; He gave me a flash drive with everything on it.

Belated Happy Birthday to you, Win!

Congratulations on your new ride!

Yes, dear hubby's Toyota Tundra has both heated and cooled seats, and boy, are you ever going to love the cooled feature! I know I sure do!

Pretty soon vehicles won't even start unless everyone in the vehicle is safely buckled in, and through the process of identifying speed signs through cameras, you won't even be able to speed.

Did you get a 4-door or coupe?

4-door. I don't think they come in a coupe any more.

I had a lot of fun with a previous car that had heated seats (I posted about it before).
I was on a first date. She drove an old car, so I knew she probably never heard of heated car seats.
I turned the heater on her seat on "High" without saying anything.
After a minute, she had a strange look on her face & I had to try very hard not to laugh.
Then she gave me a frightened look & said, "Hey, my butt's getting really hot; what's going on?"
I said, "Hey, baby, that happens to lotsa women when they're out with me." :ROFLMAO:

Beautiful. I'll bet it rides like a dream.
Yes, it's a much-better suspension than my previous Altima, which rides like a jeep. That's probably because Honda is very involved in Indy-type racing.
And, I love the steering; it's like it's riding on rails; NO play in it.

Well, now I'm LOL'ing at another feature: When I get in the car & close the door, a happy "A" Major chord sounds to greet me. (I was born with perfect pitch, so I know what notes are played without looking).
Yesterday, I went on a 100-mile trip to visit a friend. It was pouring rain. There is a water sensor so the wipers can be set on "Auto." I've seen this feature before, but it never really works right; the wipers either wipe when there is no water or they don't wipe when they should. On this car, they work perfectly; as if someone is monitoring the rain constantly.

During my test drive last Sunday, the dealer was showing me the "HUD," which is the Heads Up Display above the hood that shows the speed of the car. I wasn't very interested in it at the time; I figured, "Why bother with that when I have 2 speedometers on the dashboard?" & I also found it distracting so I turned it off. Yesterday during my trip, I realized how much safer it is to look at your speed without looking away from the road, especially during heavy rain. I can even adjust the display's height so it's right above the hood, or further up, depending on the driver's height & seat adjustment.

Some of these new features seem meaningless until you experience them and realize they are helpful. Our neighbour has the HUD and said it has kept him from inadvertently speeding.

I find it funny, here in Canada anyway, don't know about anywhere else... But cars today don't come with a spare tire anymore, they come with a can of sealant and air...
Same here in the USA. The Kia Sportage I bought new in 2016 had no spare. A can of something came with it. I did buy a donut spare from eBay at around $200. The dealer wanted $295. My KIa Soul does have a donut spare.

My car has "run flat" tires. No spare, no can of "fix-a-flat", etc. Only had one flat in 105,000 miles, and was able to drive about 10 miles to the dealer to get a new tire.

My son's new Subaru has all those bells and whistles as well, except it isn't a hybrid. I have a friend who has a Prius and it is a terrific car and extremely comfortable. But, my son loves the Subaru's ever since I owned one years ago which was a real gem. First small car I ever owned and I was pleasantly surprised.

I love my Honda CR-V. But hubby hates the lane assist. Also love the backup camera. Never thought we’d use the heated seats but when it’s a chilly morning they sure are nice. We usually turn them off in a few minutes. We’ve had the car for over a year and I’m pretty sure we don’t yet know all the gizmos.

I'd love to have one of those self-driving cars! I hope they're available soon. My eyesight has never been great, and it's getting worse. I can imagine that within a year or two I might have to give up driving. Yet, I'd hate giving up the independence of having a car.
