Originally created and produced by Allen Funt, it often featured practical jokes, and initially began on radio as The Candid Microphone on June 28, 1947.

I remember seeing an interview with Allen Funt where the interviewer asked if anyone had ever been upset by being pranked. He told the story of when the joke was on a barber and when it was revealed he'd been tricked and was so displeased he chased him around with a straight razor.

Speaking of famous clients of my father (Julie Newmar, Rita Moreno), Allen Funt was, in my dad's words "a Bum" because he didn't pay his bill and dad eventually had to sue him and won in court. Dad still enjoyed 'Candid Camera' because he didn't hold grudges & liked a good laugh.

Alan Funt’s stuff on candid camera I think was more good natured. The stuff I’ve seen recently, and I don’t go looking for it, seem more vicious or mean. (Like some of the things Ellen used to do on her show before the critics and staff called her out on it)
