Just Thought Of This........

In all my 65 1/2 years, I don't think I've ever seen a Law Enforcement Officer smoke cigarettes! When I worked around them, back in the mid 70's while working in Emergency Medical, I never seen any of them smoke. But, from going thru the Academy to patrolling the streets, highways and freeways, the activities can be too strenuous for smoking. Running after a suspect is sooner or later done by every Officer and smoking doesn't go with running.

Guess there would be some careers that don't have people who smoke cigs in.

What do you think?

I don't know, I don't think I ever thought of it. But thinking back to all the lawmen I've known I can't remember any of them lighting up or thumping a cigarette down, or while drinking coffee in some cafe, using an ashtray. Now that you've mentioned it, that's somewhat strange.

You got me on that one,I dont think Ive ever seen anyone in a uniform smoke a cigaretts....weird.

If they're not actually on a case and arresting someone etc. I can't see the object of this thread. There are much more serious
things to talk about where police are concerned.

Just like most threads around here, just a conversation piece I imagine, someone had a question on their mind, others chime in with their thoughts or provide answers. If one's hasn't any interest, they don't find more interesting threads to feed their interest like say thoughts on potty squatties.

Geeze Louise, if Andy Taylor can smoke at his desk in his office, as Sheriff of Mayberry, then it must be OK!:)

I could care less one way or the other, just showing that some do indeed smoke while on duty, not a big deal to me either. If I still smoked, and were in such a position, I wouldn't be happy to have to not be able to light up, but, at the same time, if prior to taking on the job if it is in the rules that I not do so, then it would only be reasonable that I uphold those rules. They shouldn't be arrested for it or any such thing even if it isn't the image the that the force wants to be representative of their department these days.

I would agree this isn't a topic worth splitting hairs over and I don't have anything against the officers; the nerd in me just couldn't help but seeing if I could verify one way or the other if there was a video.

PS, I've worked with and still am friendly with people in law enforcement, I don't have an agenda when it comes to people in the field, but if a question is asked, good or bad about people in the field, I do my best to answer honestly as I'm able.

Oh, oh. Joe Friday use to smoke up a storm.

That was my first response. Sgt Friday... Jack Webb. I'm trying to recall some of the older detective shows. Lots of the westerns saw the cowboys smoke. Some of the sit-coms had smokers acting in them. There was another one... something like "The Edge of Night"... that's not correct, but a detective show my grandfather used to watch where the actors smoked.

Real life... I smoked for 20 years, quitting cold turkey in 1984. In the '70's, I was involved in some police work. There were quite a few of use who smoked. So much of my time was night duty in a smaller community. Most of the time... boring! Pretty well smoked to stay awake.

I work around lots of construction crews. Today, even few of the construction workers smoke. Most of us have learned the lessons of how smoking can be detrimental, not only to one's own health but to the health of their friends and family.

Heck, even the talk-show hosts used to smoke like chimneys! EVERYONE seems to have smoked in the '50's and '60's.

I've known several cops that smoked more than tobacco, but I assume that wasn't the gist of the OP's question. As was said, smoking certainly cuts down on your available energy and breath, and, at least nowadays, could be perceived as a nasty habit by the public.

... the same public that robs and kills and does meth, that is ...

The PSP has very strict rules regarding smoking. However, back in the day, detectives were known to have cigarettes on them all the time, even if they didn't smoke. If they would be interrogating a suspect, the detective can appear to be friendly by offering the suspect a smoke.
