Orchestra Conductor Riddle

Never miss an opportunity to take a thread south.
I heard this song, sung by an ancient man from Tennessee.
I thought 'Damn.' they wrote rough songs in the 1800's

I didn't believe it was an actual song=goggle says it is:

"He picked a stick up off the ground
and knocked that fair girl down.
He grabbed her by her golden curls
and drug her round and round
and threw her in the river that flows through Knoxville Town?

This is a real mountain folks song titled 'Knoxville Girl,; I think that is the title.
Wonder was he an orchestra conductor?
