Today's newest scam

Gaer

"Angel whisperer"
Someone got into my e-mail contact list, copied the name of one of my men friends and e-mailed me, asking if I could please do a favor for him. (using my fried's name)
I said, "Sure, if i can"
He wrote back that he was out of town so he couldn't do this but he wanted me to buy 4 $100 gift cards for a gift to give to his niece. I am to get the code off the back and photograph them, and give him the numbers. When he gets back home, he will reimburse me. I wonder how many people actually do this because they think they're doing this for a friend?

Just wanted to alert you kind hearted souls.

Thanks for the heads-up, Gaer.

I can't tell you the conversations dear husband and I have had related to getting rid of our telephone.

We wouldn't, but you know marketing and scam callers are bad when regular everyday average folk no longer want a telephone, because of such.

What a Scam....Here is another one that just drives me off the cliff... I own a business in Ohio. So Far, I have received 8 request for verification from the state of Ohio. This request ask that you verify that the these persons were actually an employee of ours, when they were released and the reason they were released. Not a one of them were ever employees of ours. The form they filled out, requires that they provide the phone number for the business. None of the phone numbers they provided have been correct, however one did get the area code correct.

Gaer, Glad you saw through the scam.

I received one once that came from a different email address but the name on the email was the same as a friend of mine both first and last names. Also asking for help of some kind. I deleted it once I saw the contents and realized it was not from a friend. I have had people call me from my own telephone number before. I generally laugh and hang up.

I have direct deposit of my SS retirement payments. A few years ago, I got a notice in the mail, confirming that my checks were then to be sent to a street address- in another state. I called SS, and had them rescind this order. I was grateful the SS people sent me notification of the change before it was to occur. I had no idea i was about to be ripped of. And a few years before, a con woman was bilking car dealerships, and driving off in new cars. She gave a false name. The state had no such town, and therefore the street address was also bogus, and the zip code was not for that state. BUT she used my telephone number. She ripped off 5-6 cars and always used MY telephone number. Apparently, if you don't use a real telephone number, it's immediately known. I can't tell you the hundreds of phone calls I got over this stuff. I'm not sure if it was Nevada, or Arizona that had a law that said if you could collect on a debt that was over 7 years old, ( the legal limit to regain funds owed) you could keep all the money, and not have to pay anything to anybody. It was like a cottage industry-all you needed was phone to bug people to death with. It was totally unregulated by anyone. These SOBs would call day and night. The state got rid of that law, because of all the abuse. They bugged me for years And it was all because the con woman used my phone number. I don't know how she got my number.

Has anybody been contacted by people speaking with an Indian accent saying they're ringing from Windows about the problem on your computer? They then ask for access and if you agree they take over your computer and gain access to everything. Then you have to pay for them to unlock your computer. I have them call from time to time and I have two answers. I either say that I'm recording the conversation and will hand it over to the police which makes them ring off very quickly. Or I string them along with a load of questions about whether I should go in to BIOS to make the changes which they can't answer because they have a script to follow. Then I round off by telling them I have a Mac, which is true.

They once rang four times in one day and the last time my son was here and I gave him the phone and he told them to f**k off. Five minutes later they rang back and asked why he'd been so rude!!

A friend of mine fell for this, he is totally useless with computers and it cost him a packet to have a store reset his laptop.

I block every phone number that doesn’t show a name or isn’t in my contact list. I figure if it’s important, they will leave a message

I get so many spam calls every day. Usually, if I don't recognize the number I just don't answer. In the last few days, I got a call from someone about medicare. They say where they are calling from and then say "Can you hear me ?" I immediately hang up because I read somewhere if the caller asks can you hear me and you reply yes, they are able to somehow use your voice saying yes and put it in another part of the call and it makes it seem that you accepted whatever offer they are giving you. So I don't say anything and just hang up.

Thanks for telling us that! Wow! We really have to be careful, don't we?

Thank you Gaer, I hope you didn't fall for it.

Mike.
No, 1. I knew he didn't have a lot of money. Why would he spend $400 on a "niece"?
2. I matched the address to the one in my contact list. it was ALMOST the same. ALMOST!
3. Why ME? Why wouldn't he ask someone closer to him?
4. If he was "out of town", places to buy gift cards are pretty much everywhere.
Didn't sit right.

My latest scam was a text at 1:30 am to call PayPal and verify my information due to suspicious activity.

So many scam calls and texts that if anything ever does happen to one of my accounts I will probably ignore it.

I have a call blocking service... it requires the caller to say their name before I press a number on my phone to unblock them.. if it's not someone I know I just simply put the phone down, and they're no wiser as to whether I picked the phone up or not..

BT have at last realised that it was their own employees who started this. Customers were complaining that they got one of these calls immediately after they had made a service call. BT insisted it was just coincidence, but they seem to have investigated and found where the calls originated. They had customers details but not their financial info.
