Years ago in my teen years, I was a head (Red Cross WS) lifeguard at a municipal swimming pool. Having such an exalted position meant I had to get there early and clean both locker rooms and then check on them periodically throughout the day. Although not quite the same as a psychiatric ward, locker rooms were instructive. The women's side was always busy and noisy with a lot of chatter. About the only thing you'd hear on the men's side was showers, some mumbling and the opening and closing of lockers. BTW, locker check on the women's side meant opening the door and yelling, "Locker check - everything OK in there?" if no women lifeguards were on duty to go in there for you.
