New Zealand calls for evacuations after 8.1 quake hits off the coast

A powerful magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck in the ocean off the coast of New Zealand on Friday, prompting thousands of people to evacuate and triggering tsunami warnings across the South Pacific. The quake was the largest in a series of tremors that struck the region over several hours, including two earlier quakes that registered magnitude 7.4 and magnitude 7.3, the AP reports.

Yikes, That's up there in magnitude.

Best wishes to survivors or anyone in a tsunami path surviving and with any after shocks, effects etc.

That's scary. There is a guy on YouTube that tries to create a earthquake prediction model based on sunspot activity. I never can tell if he is cherry-picking data or not. He seems very sincere at least.

When in NZ, a local took us to an earthquake demo site. You push the button and the floors move, scenery shakes, etc. It was only a 6 for a few seconds. I did not like it. That friend woke this morning to the shaking and the alarms. They’re ok.

New Zealand lies directly on the Pacific rim of fire. It is the boundary of the Pacific plate and the Indo/Australian plate. NZ is not called the Shaky Isles for nothing.

That's a pretty big one, but when you live in an area that is prone to destructive natural events ... earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, or forest fires ... you plan for them, you build for them, you train for them ... and you expect them.

My prayers for those affected.

Here's a similar video, Honey. This guy is a student of natural sciences. He's also a teacher.
