Happy hour

Like a lot of seniors my body has become sensitive to any substance that is a Central Nervous System depressant. And, I don't take NSAIDs for pain, as they elevate the dangers of heart attack and stroke. Plus, with me NSAIDs greatly increases my tendency for skin wounding/ bruising, and I just hate being covered with those from the merest of bumps.
However, I do enjoy a cocktail at 5 o'clock, for the pleasant feeling, plus it takes the edge off my osteoarthritis discomfort. The downside is that a wee bit too much alcohol can impact quality sleep, which I cherish greatly.
It occurred to me: maybe I should have my "5 o'clock cocktail" earlier in the day, maybe at lunch instead of dinner. ?
For those who partake- what time is your happy hour?

Nathan I feel the same as you about NSAIDs, they also wreck my stomach. And like you, alcohol interferes with my sleep. Therefore, I don't imbibe often.

I don't have a "happy hour". I think if you do want a happy hour each day, have it earlier, as long as you know you don't have to drive anywhere. Or, stay out of the "wee bit too much" zone. 🌹

I can't take NSAID's either, because I take Eliquis. If I need a pain reliever, Tylenol is pretty much the only option I have.

I like a glass of wine late in the afternoon also. Not as a pain reliever, I just like the taste and the warm feeling. When I say a glass of wine, I really mean about half a glass. That's plenty. I pour the wine and put something good on the TV. Not every day, but a few times a week. I never worry about whether it's 5:00 yet. The world won't come to an end if I have my 1/2 glass of wine at 4:00 instead.

I never have alcohol later than that, as it interferes with my sleep.

Well Nathan,
I usually have a bourbon at 5 PM

I don't like NSAIDS either.

Have you tried Glycine? A natural amino acid that reduces inflammation.
Does wonders for my arthritis and pain in my hands. No side effects.
I buy a product called Sweetamine and add it to my smoothie.
Do a search on it. you'll be surprised.

I have a happy hour when I wake up....
Then another happy hour a bit later in the day

In summer, its when I'm done working and thirsty
Prolly around sundown
That'd be Michelob Amberbock of late
A bottle or two

The hard stuff has been Glenmorangie
Been trying to kill that jug of single malt for a couple years
I don't pull that cork unless I have company

Guess I don't drink that much anymore

Learned a long time ago, happy hours are not all that happy
.....at least in bars
They really should change that moniker
Maybe fight night
Still got a couple bends in my nose from happy hours

Anymore, I prefer water

...or sun tea

I have a glass of Arbor Mist Blackberry Merlot every night before bed along with three OTC sleep aid pills. Only way I can get to sleep before 4 or 5 am.

I used to drink beer when I was young, then gave it up for many years. Just recently, past month or so, I've been getting a four pack of 16 oz beers to drink on Saturday night while I'm watching TV. I usually have something to eat that goes good with beer, like hot pork rinds or maybe some taquitos or some other Tex-Mex type food, because that is the only style of food that I like to have beer with. I think beer ruins the taste of most food.

I’m going to look for Glicine & Sweetamine too! . I also have also have night hand pain. Arthritis & nerve prob.
But my happy hour ritual is to have a few Hershey minies after dinner while I try to do the day’s NYTimes crossword puzzle. (I just don’t enjoy alcohol) and have figured out how to to manage some of the nsaids used sparingly.

While I can appreciate others enjoying Happy Hour, I have been sober 43 years and don't imbibe. However, there are two things toward the end of the day that would constitute my version of Happy Hour:

1. Since my wife and I decided to eat dinner at what would otherwise be lunch time since we don't have the energy at the end of the day, we eat a small lunch in the evening and watch some movie or TV series on our amazon premier account together.

2. I am continually working out new instrumental fingerstyle arrangements by ear on the guitar.

These may seem boring to some and perfect to others here. They are perfect for us. While I work on some arrangement, my wife likes to read. She seems to like what I play, so there aren't any complaints. It is all unamplified acoustic, so no loud noise - just quiet restful music.

I barely imbibe. There for a little while at the beginning of this pandemic it was a daily thing. Once I calmed down and they let us wear masks and stuff I started to relax some. Plus I started using THC free CBD oil for my nerves. Don't need a drink very often now.

When we were visiting my wife's sisters in Arkansas last October, one of them let me use some of her CBD cream called Pain Freeze for a lower back ache. It worked very well, so I bought a little jar of it. That stuff lasts a long time because it doesn't take much.

Sounds like the perfect way to spend an evening.

I just have to look at a bottle of over the counter pain medication and my stomach gets upset.
Luckily I don't need pain medication that often. Usually one Tylenol with a lot of liquid is all I can tolerate for minor problems.
At night my Ambien gives me a good night sleep with no aches or pains.
A lot of people have problems with Ambien and I'm probably hooked but at 75 who cares.
As far as happy hour goes, in the winter I like hot cocoa with a half a bag of marshmallows on top, sometimes you can't find the cocoa.
In the summer an ice cream soda does the trick.

We have a happy “hour” every night after we both get done with work. The time varies but we usually begin somewhere between 5-7. Tonight it was sometime after 7 just because we each had long work days.

We drink what we feel like...sometimes it’s the same for each, sometimes different. Tonight Ron had a couple Buds, and I had a couple Margaritas. Sometimes we’ll share a bottle of wine, usually a moscato. Sometimes he’ll have a jack and coke and I’ll have a Bloody Mary.

Just depends on what we feel like, what we’re having for dinner, how late it is, what we have on hand. It’s always different, but the focus is on relaxing together after a long work day.
