He was the force behind the 1976 wine tasting event in Paris where US wines were first rated above classic French wines for the first time by French wine critics in a blind tasting. It is what really moved the US wine reputation and especially that of Napa Valley forward into the world spotlight.

Even though I haven't been affected directly by the event it has shaped the focus and direction of wine in the US and has made a big difference in the wine I've had in my life.

I don't know of him but do remember that "shocking" news.
Also remember hearing of some foodie wine snob in France ordering the best imported wine and they brought him something from California. YAY!

If you like to read there's a great book, Judgment of Paris by George M Taber about Steven Spurrier's background, the events that lead up to the tasting, the tasting itself and the aftermath of the tasting. If you love wine it's a great read. Even if you're mildly interested you might enjoy it. As I recall it was a very enjoyable read.

I remember him as Head Coach with the Washington Football Team formerly known as The Redskins.
