What are your thoughts about Edward Snowden?

A whistleblower is anyone who has and reports insider knowledge of illegal activities in an organization. Whistleblowers are protected from retaliation under various programs created by occupational safety and health administration, Sarbanes Oxley Act and the securities and exchange commission. Federal employee protection is under the Whistleblower protection act of 1989.

Edward Joseph Snowden is a former computer intelligence consultant who copied and leaked highly classified information from the national security agency in 2013 that revealed numerous global surveillance programs, run by the NSA and the Five Eyes intelligence Alliance with the cooperation of telecommunications companies and European governments.

Snowden remains a subject of controversy, he has been called a traitor, a hero, a whistleblower, a dissident and a patriot. US officials condemn his actions as having done "grave damage" to the US intelligence capabilities. Snowden defended his leaks as an effort "to inform the public as to that which done in their name and that which is done against them.

Do you prefer knowing as opposed to not knowing pertinent information that may impact the way you live?

Given the strong opposition of people in power it is unlikely Edward Snowden will return to the US without subjection to a court of law. How would you vote guilty or not guilty if in some way made a mental note that the privacy act was exploited by our own trusted officials.

Having worked in the same field of communications I can say
that without a doubt, he is a TRAITOR to the USA. His
reasoning for releasing the info was a selfish "see me" act.
If I released the info in my old brain that is still present from
when I was a code clerk I would be considered a traitor also and subject to the same laws/punishment he is subject to.

Kind of a dopey-looking guy. He should have just done his assigned job and gone home like the rest of the contractors. My son did work at a government site. He said there was so much rigmarole surrounding otherwise uncomplicated work he begged off the next time he was asked.

I believe that 100%. I believe he was appalled by what the NSA was doing and that he thought and still thinks it was wrong. And the Supreme Court agrees, but I don't believe the NSA made the kind of changes that they said they did.

From what I know about it, the NSA was violating our Constitutional rights under the 4th Amendment:

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
The NSA was given our information by most of the phone companies, although from what I remember, some of them refused. I'm not sure about Google and Facebook.

If you look at what Snowden did from an objective perspective, he was acting in the interest of our country -- as a patriot, so to speak, although that term has been corrupted by those on the far right to the point where it has lost pretty much all of its original meaning with regards to our Founding Fathers. He was protecting our Constitution, which is what he was sworn to do and what national security leaders were violating. Those are the people we should be going after -- not Snowden.

I read the book 2 weeks ago. It was very good & I highly recommend it. I am so tired of all those stupid surveys & Amazon tracking us that I am a lot more careful now. It's a darn good thing that I hate advertising in all it's forms & never buy anything on impulse. I don't like having something pushed down my throat. Don't even like the young "bors" driving around with their vehicles full of advertising signs & web addresses. When will the madness end? How much can people take? A lot I guess! Amazon is silly. You can look for "women's panties" on the internet (for a joke) and the next day you are swamped with silly adds for women's panties. Don't believe me? Ha! Just try it! The world really is going mad!

I feel bad for my younger grandkids. They don't understand the issue and what's possibly at stake, so don't they don't even see it as an issue - I'm just spewing old people stuff.

Modern day conveniences come at the cost of privacy. Today more than ever, there people and organizations who know you and what you do.

Sometimes members want to join in but don't have much to add really. That's okay. They have that right.
And you handled it nicely by just asking her what she wanted to talk about.

My thoughts about Edward Snowden are non-existent. The topic doesn't interest me.
I am curious about your sudden appearance on SF. And what seems to be negative overtones. I don’t recognize you from previous posts so forgive me if I am wrong.

I have been a member of Senior Forums for 2+ years! Please feel free to put me on ignore if my comments fall "outside the norm".

The same people who want to see Snowden locked up for exposing government wrongdoings seem to be the same people who rally against government intrusions into our lives. They don't mind the government spying on us as long as they approve of who's doing the spying.

I agree. But, even though what he did was “right” in many ways, he was and is a traitor. I would vote guilty.
