Does anybody listen to todays music or do you prefer music you grew up with?

Love the Oldies, Elvis, Orbison, Old time Rock n Roll, Bon Jovi,. Listen to a lot of classical, too. Like everything except for the Rap, Metal and vulgar music, if you can call it music.

Odd one here .... I listen to, and love, the music on the radio TODAY. ... Pop/Rock and the new stuff. It keeps me upbeat, and enjoying life more than listening to older music from 60s - 80s. etc..
The old stuff has its place, but so much of it brings me down. When I'm ready for a walk down memory lane I can always find old favorites, but I don't do that very often.

Funny how music stays a part of your life, no matter how old you may be. My favorites are 60s, 70s, and 80s. But so many artists over the years have captured my attention, too. I do like the current songs, until they get old and more come on. Not all new songs, of course, but more of the softer, mellow ones that speak of love, crushes, and "you be good to my used to be"......hope that isn't lyrics, or I'm gonna be sued. ;)

I agree with you @Bonnie.....the new stuff is more upbeat!

I sure do!

Just as I did back in the day, I still love Big Band... the likes of Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman.

In addition to, some 50's music... LOVE the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's!

Today's noise isn't music, it's nothing more than boom, boom, boom, boom, hollering and screeching at the tops of ones lungs, and as far as I'm concerned there isn't a stitch of musicality behind it.

There's a lot of new music that doesn't fit your categorization. You just aren't listening to the right things to find new music you might enjoy. I would agree that a lot of what is out there in the popular realm does fit your description.

born in 1949. soooo lucky Dad like HIS popular music... was a lot of "new", popular stuff that came out of areas right next-door. Bill Halley & the Comets, the 4 Aces. i remember dad pointing out while on beach in AC... hey, that's Johnny Ray! there was a radio station that ONLY played Sinatra on Sunday's... you didn't dare touch that dial!

i kinda missed Elvis... just a tad before my time with pop music. i got sucked into the British Invasion and all those sun-bleached blond surfer groups. before pop music went big time (on FM dial), i remember the most poplar AM station in Philly area was WIBG with Hy Lit as the best DJ ever (“Hyski O’Rooney McVoutie O’Zoot”).

Dad wasn't big into r&r but LOVED Broadway musicals. sooo we could invariably sing along. we saw several in HUGE tents... Valley Forge Music Fair & Lambertville Music Circus.

I worked for several years as a teacher's aide with special needs HS students. i remember one student working on a PowerPoint presentation in his music class. an "artist" or group of his choice. he had no idea where to begin so we did things like... what's his/her real name, and awards, member of a group or single, etc. as he was wrapping up, i reminded him that he could put a short video clip in. he said... this person had NO CLEAN VERSIONS of anything on youtube!!! and out of my head comes... well, then it's garbage! he says "i don't judge". i come back with "everybody else does!" and i can PROVE lil whoever's "music" is pure trash. i asked 3 questions. would he play it out-loud for his retired Air Force dad? would he play it for his mother & grandparents? would he play it in CHURCH? i rested my case!

in one of his other classes, the teacher had music playing in the background while kids were independently working. i didn't realize i was singing out loud until i looked around and noticed every kid was sitting with dropped jaws. and they thought i was singing THEIR music.

feel free to join in the harmony!

There is, and I do delve into it, but overall I don't think much of the new mainstream.

i still remember a CRAZY French teacher from HS... Mr Savitz. he was an amateur opera singer and often graced us with arias. we studied Gounod's "Faust". read the libretto & listened to all the music. THEN we went to NYC and WATCHED the performance at The Metropolitan Opera House... WOW!

I'm a data geek and love recording and processing data. I rate all of the songs that I listen to and keep them in a spreadsheet. This thread got me wondering what years my top 20 artiss are from. Here are two top 20 lists, one with artists who have 20 or more songs out and another with 4 or more songs out. I chose 4 because that's often the number of songs on an EP which is the type or release that a new group or artist will often release as their first available recording. The second list also has the place in the top 20 with over 20 songs places in the 4 or more songs artist list. I've also included the date range of releases and any artist with 2021 in their latest date might not have released anything in 2021 but I know they are still active.

Most people will not know most of those artists in my lists. Artists with the same number are tied for that position.

That's really cool, I wish I were more precise in the things I do, but not nature.

Can't say I listen much to "today's music" but I like hearing new things.

When I drive around town I listen to an alternative station. Heard this today and really liked it. It's already 14 years old so not today's music, but still new to me.

I miss listening to a good (and I mean GOOD) radio station and discovering new music. Yeah, yeah, yeah there are the subscription online things but not to my liking. Luckily around here there is KPIG 107.5FM. Real people who actually talk to you and not at you. They play a lot of old and new stuff and lots of Americana. They promote themselves as The Last Great Radio Station.

I would like to post some old standup comedy acts but I've been banned twice before for innapropriate posts so I'll behave

Seems we, or should I say ME, adore the same music I loved when I was 15 to 20 years old.
Why is this?
I don't know, but most do seem to like that period music the best. ( Now, watch 800 will post that they don't) But, there's just something about the music of 60s & 70s- yup, I'm 74. For some strange reason, I listened more, and was more aware of music during those years. As I got older music just wasn't the big deal it was. I stopped buying record and tapes. I bought my last CD 20 years ago. I've never heard of 99% of the Grammy winners each year. All I listen to on the car radio is the Oldies" station.

By the way, you may not have noticed it, but rock really is dead. I looked at the Top 20 songs on Spotify and none could be considered "rock" in the traditional sense, by which I mean people playing their own instruments (usually electric guitars, bass, drums and sometimes keyboards) and singing songs they have written. Usually to a strong beat, with influences of country and/or blues.

The kids have moved on. We're the only ones listening to the old stuff.

LOL!

I was just listening to a radio broadcast, Jim, where a popular country music star was venting her sadness over how country music has fallen by wayside today.

Myself, I've never been a fan of country, in fact loathe it.

" . . . Rock is dead they say
Long live rock
Long live rock! I need it every night
Long live rock! Come on and join the line
Long live rock! Be it dead or alive . . . "

i worked as a teacher for several years in a NJ prison. got volunteered to be sponsor for 1st Toastmasters club in a prison.
can't remember particulars but one of these original guys and 2 other guys were given permission to come into the institution.

and they sang THIS a capella!!

I like nearly All music...Old, New, Classical, you name it. About the only "music" that turns me off is this Rap Crap. I like to watch the MTV Live channel on TV, and lately they have broadcasted a performance by an "Indie Rock" group from Australia...called "Gang of Youths". This group consists of outstanding musicians, and an entertaining lead singer, and I would like to see them garner a wide fan base.
