Fed up' liquor store owner shoots shoplifting suspect in the back

She is 88 year old and has probably seen enough of cheap thieves taking money our of her pocket. Yet, shooting them is not going to stop anyone. So we have an elderly woman on a tight budget and a young person with no money for whatever reason. The formula is right for trouble. When I was in school to get my concealed gun permit there was a store owner there asking if it was legal to shoot a robber running away from him. The officer said "no". The store owner became very irate and kept pursuing the issue with the officer. The person was from another country, probably the Middle East and had trouble understanding our laws and how they work. In parts of the Middle East thieves can have their hands cut off for stealing so the idea of a person stealing his money then being able to run away was foreign to him. Personally, I would never permit anyone in my family work in any type of retail store. I knew personally three people that were shot to death in their stores.
 
The simple answer is, NO, you are not allowed to shoot a shoplifter, if their only crime is that they have walked into your store, picked up a bottle of cognac (preferably Hennessy) and walked back out. Get a good description of the intruder and call 9-1-1. The cops will take it from there.

Do anything more than that and you will be the one paying for both money for a lawyer and probably time in prison. Yeah, you taught him/her a lesson and others will hear about the experience also, but keep in mind that some actions do have consequences.

You may be out $50 give or take a few dollars, but at least you won't be spending any time away from your loved ones.

I'm really surprised at some people who think they can just get a gun, & "Not take crap from anyone." And you'd think someone who's been here for 88 years has learned something by then.
 
Right, the force used must be reasonable, just like law enforcement standards.

A good example would be if a 400 pound hulk was attacking you, you would have the right to use any means available to stop him, including lethal force.

Now, if a 100 pound 100 year old woman starting hitting me with a cane, I would not be justified in using force against her like against the Hulk.
 
You people should watch "Gunsmoke, Rawhid & Have Gun Will Travel". You would learn that only low down cowards shoot people in the back. Yes, only the meanest and most dirty cowards take this approach. Shame on them!

Poor sweet old lady. She needs to be taken into protective custody to protect the public.

And that snippet of video showing someone hiding a bottle under his jacket - disgraceful news presentation to give the impression that it was a fit young man. The dead man's story should be told just as much as the shooter's.

The person she shot is expected to live. She would not be in trouble though if she had just called the cops.

The only legal justification to shoot a fleeing suspect, is if you have a reasonable belief if they were permitted to get loose, they would commit serious bodily harm or death to someone.
