Woman Says $26M California Lottery Ticket Destroyed in Wash

If the claimant really bought the ticket I hope she winds up with the loot.

"If the prize isn't claimed, the $19.7 million [cash-out amount] will go to California public schools."

That's a joke. It will go to the school district and they'll buy new office furniture or throw a party. Some will pocket it. Some districts divvy it up as bonuses for themselves and teachers. So a principal or a teacher gets that new couch they always wanted while students still have to ask their parents to buy a dang pencil.

For sure Murrmurr. State Lotteries are the most lucrative con jobs known to modern man. Just like in Floriduh (The appendix of America) I always wondered where all that Lottery cash went since every new school had like ten trailers for the students within one year after the main school was built. Not to mention that the students had to compete with the hawkers on street corners to get money for their sports programs.

When California put the state lottery on the voters ballot back in 1984, they failed to include an expenditure allotment and/or disbursement guidelines. They have yet to correct that error.

Failed as opposed to refuse? Yeah that's the ticket, (Pun intended) that will work.

Perhaps the store selling the ticket has video of the purchaser. I‘m surprised they didn’t check the video already.

A few years ago, the BC lottery corporation told a woman she had won a million dollar plus prize. They had her on video making the purchase a year earlier. She didn’t remember anything about it. If they can do this for one, then in theory they can do it for everyone. They supposedly thought it would be a feel good story that the public wasn’t too happy about.

There was a young couple that went through this as well. When they discovered what they did they threw the ticket in the trash which was later picked up and taken to the city dump. Soon after they learned the ticket could have been validated despite being in the laundry. A double whammy!

When the lottery looks into it, they do ask to see video of the purchase. When you buy a ticket, it's time-stamped, as is the store's camera.

I buy a State lottery ticket, $1, once or twice a week. Here, the State mandates that the money goes to the schools, so I figure that helps keep the property taxes in check. Once in awhile, I splurge a couple of dollars on a Powerball, ticket. but the odds are ridiculously high on those.

Yeah, the same thing happened to me. My winning ticket was in my jean pocket, when I washed them. There must be a million other people, who did the same. At least there are, now.:)
