Are People Hiding Behind Covid Masks?

I came across this article on the wires (NBC News) entitled They're keeping their masks on. Their reasons extend beyond their health. Below is a snippet.

As mask mandates ease across the country, many people are finding that their affinity for face coverings extends beyond health reasons. Even with no requirement to wear their masks, some people are continuing to do so — having come to appreciate the reprieve they provide from stifling social expectations while out in public.
These mask-wearers say they see a multitude of benefits to covering up. No one can tell you to smile when you don’t feel like it. It gives you a break from putting on makeup. And it provides a degree of anonymity.
Thus, the question is answered for some. The follow-on question would be, "How many?"

I suspected as much. Didn't you?

People who are inhibited to some degree might find that the mask makes them be less inhibited. It might have a positive effect on them in the long run even without a mask.

I suppose it's their business if they want to wear a mask. So if they like it, let them. Just no more mandates please. 🤗
I agree that if people want to wear a mask, then let them. That said, I will generally not engage in any meaningful conversation with somebody who is wearing a mask. I like to to see the face of people I am talking to. I will be polite and, if necessary, helpful but that's it. This has become standard practice at the grocery store parking lot where the mask mavens want to chat. With politeness, it doesn't happen.

Call me old fashioned but I don't talk to people wearing diapers. Actually, I hate wearing diapers myself and remove the darn thing the very second my 1st foot leaves the store.

you know i'm truly surprised at the level of prejudice and hatred i see in here at times. i can't believe you two are so rude that you would deliberately not talk to someone whose only trying to keep themselves safe. shame on you.

Rude? Perhaps in your mind. If people talk to me with a mask on, I am polite, not rude. Whether I choose to continue a conversation was always at my discretion. Should the other party wear a mask, it will just be a shorter, but polite, conversation. As for your trying to scold me for my behavior, it didn't take. Find somebody else to nanny.

Report From The Front Lines Of No More Masking: Well, I went to the market for milk and some "fixins" for a Mississippi roast. Probably less than 5% of the people were still wearing masks. It seemed like those wearing masks were glaring at those of us who weren't but you couldn't be sure (other than note that the maskers spent more time staring hard at those who didn't). Everyone else, especially, the cashiers, were quite happy to be rid of the face diapers. It was a happy time at the supermarket.

I hear ya loud and clear. We are fully masked around here. I hear that some people want to wear their diapers for a long, long time. However, I'm gonna have a nice strong shot of rum to celebrate the day when I can go shopping without that awful diapers twitching my nose.
