The Summer Solstice

When I was young & dumb, I never understood people my age (85) going to Florida or Texas about November. Now that I'm older & WISER I can understand why they went. I hate snow, short days of sunshine & cold.

Thanks Mike for letting us know. I know that it is somewhere around June 21 but the media seems often to ignore this very important fact of life. I think it is because so far there is no money to be made from the longest day of the year. Not like Valentine's Day, Christmas, Easter, Mother's & Father's Day. These "holidays" we are reminded weeks ahead so that the shopping frenzy can start. After today, it is down hill for winter. Another thing to consider, where I live it is still lock down on most things so it appears that we are screwed for the 2nd summer in a row. But, not all is lost, because the politicians can play golf in a foursome. That is allowed! However, no visiting to anyone's house. Nada!
 
I yapped about the cold winter weather in Massachusetts. Until, I was stationed in GTMO, Cuba. 80+ in the day,72, at night. Day after day. About Dec 24th, I saw a guy carrying a Xmas tree, and he was dressed only in shorts. I know it sounds dumb. Here I was in a tropical paradise, but I craved to see the seasons change. Xmas wasn't Xmas without the cold and snow. Nah, you can't be carrying a Xmas tree dressed only in shorts.

At least there is someone who loves fall and winter.
A lot of people suffer from depression in the winter that is when I feel my best.
Endless days to do my many projects, no yard work except to plan next years garden. Can't wait.
I do feel sorry for people who have to travel in the snow, I sort of forgot what that was like. Its been awhile.

It sucks, that's why I prefer summer warmth. I never have to worry about shoveling or slipping on ice. 🤗
 
In my younger, more woolly days, I did a lot of backpacking in hot tropical countries (Sumatra, Borneo, Thailand, Sri Lanka, South India, Bali, etc.). Everyday it is hot and humid. You sweat and sweat unless of course, you are one of those on cruise ships living in air conditioning. Give me the 4 seasons of Canada and the Northern US anytime. Tropical hot, sweaty countries are OK to visit but I sure wouldn't want to live there. Saw a video on You Tube a few days ago, called "8 Reasons to Leave Costa Rica." Makes me glad that I never fell for all that real estate hype about retiring to Panama or some other sweat shop place. I remember reading all the hype about the great retirement life in Lake Chapala, Mexico. It sounded pretty rosey until the wife and I went down and spent a winter there. The climate was nice but no so much the terrible polluting traffic, the barking dogs all night and the dust. Different strokes for different folks but for me I'm staying where I am, winter and all.

Stonehenge is only twenty odd miles from where I live. We get large numbers every solstice, winter as well as summer.
Did you know that the word solstice is derived from the Latin sol ("sun") and sistere ("to stand still"), because at the solstices, the Sun's declination appears to "stand still"; that is, the seasonal movement of the Sun's daily path (as seen from Earth) pauses at a northern or southern limit before reversing direction?
