Canadians Toppling Statues of Queen Victoria & Queen Elizabeth ll

Oh dear, Canadians uprising against a dead Queen and one
who is almost 100 years old because of the bodies of indigenous
children, found in a mass grave.

I don't understand the logic of their actions as I am sure that they
knew nothing about it, nor would they have condoned such bad
treatment of any children.

I am at a loss.

Tearing down statues and burning buildings will never change the course of history nor kill off a religious belief. So much wasted energy on all this chaos and mayhem everywhere is sad when these folks could be so productive.

Who knew that a prolonged time of peace would be so boring to so many?

This is part of the issue. Blame the media for misuse of a word that is misleading but is better click bait. It wasn’t a mass grave. It was a cemetery with unmarked graves. The request to know the names was refused by the Catholic Church. More graves were found than expected, though no clear number has been given. Any very old, rural cemetery has lost graves.

The outrage in our country right now is sizzling hot, Mike

Catholic churches are going up in flames everywhere.

Hand-torched, not forest fire related.
Ironically, many of the elders who might have been in these schools were the ones who loved the churches that were burned by the arsonists. Not all churches are even Catholic, many are Anglican and weren’t involved in the residential school system.

Also, schools that were never part of the system are being burned too.

As @Marg says, the situation if sizzling hot.

Yap, this country seems to be going "to the dogs" but I blame the media for this, I blame the young people who have been spoiled by their parents and the "feel good" education system and maybe I blame our Canadian society who tries to please everyone all the time. History is history and you can't sweep it under the carpet and forget it's lessons. Destroying statues or changing names of streets solves nothing. We need to know our history, understand it and try to learn from it. Ever watch a western like "Wagon Train." When someone died, they placed a simple wooden cross on the grave. There were no fancy memorial businesses around with granite stone markers for sale. These crosses might have lasted 5 years no more. Many of these graves are from 1870s. The trouble with our youth is that they don't understand why Canada had residential school. This was 150 years ago and it continued until the very recent past. The government totally supported the idea of making the Indian into nice worker bees and consumers just like the white people. The churches were used to process this government decision. They took them away from their family and put them into isolated schools. TB killed many of these poor kids because they were crowded into dorms. You got to realize that 150 years ago we did not know about "social spacing" nor how TB was spread. These young people burning & painting churches have no idea of how people thought 150 years ago. Historical understanding is acquired by education; not starring into smartphones or playing games. 100 years from now many people will look back at us here in 2021 and shake their heads at our stupidity.

Excellent post, Jules!

What to me is most upsetting is that it is happening
in Canada, a country that I thought was such a nice
place, full of nice people!

What happened?

Mike.

Great post, Packs!

bad and lots of idiots floating around in all countries mike '
our queen has nothing to do with the graves etc .....Canada are you bored???
think they should get the people who are burning gods churches and in prison

them for arson !!!!!!

IMO it’s a global change brought on by social media.

A modern day version of vigilanteism or mob rule inspired and fueled by the anonymity of social media coupled with the frustration of many individuals.

I’m afraid that countries around the world will be forced to replace traditional law enforcement with military force to control this new form of violent protest and spontaneous mob violence.

Very sad and very scary times that we live in.

I do understand the outrage of church and our government but knocking down statues won’t change a thing. Most of us know this. A few don’t.

The church had far too much power which they shouldn’t have had to begin with. Religion and politics should have never been mixed. Our government shouldn’t have gotten involved in traditional cultures the way they did of our indigenous people and religion should never have even been considered.

NO I am not bored and if I was, I’d start one of my many hobbies and burning churches isn’t one of them.
Thanks. 🤬

Not just social media, but now polarized traditional media as well. Western nations are being herded to tribalism and most are falling for it. The question is who will ....or who thinks they will... benefit from the fracture. Probably a good many different internal and global groups think it, but the strongest, most cohesive will win the resource spoils ...likely China.

Where in anything I said did I indicate that I think arson is ok? Nowhere! I never, ever think violence is a solution to a problem. Never! And I never will.

I personally have no idea why these people did this. My mindset isn’t the same as theirs. We merely only share the same country and ‘clearly’ not the same perception.

35 Million people aren’t all going to be ‘nice.’ There are jerks in any country. Think of bar fights, rioting after a lost hockey game (Vancouver), bullies picking on innocent people, thieves, etc, etc, etc.

We have no idea if the people pulling down statues really understand what their supposed reason is or if it’s just an excuse to riot. They‘ve harmed many innocent people.

It’s long past time for the Catholic Church to apologize for their part, IMO.

Maybe the churches like the odd one being burned,
one less to maintain, but then I know that Canada is
a very big country and can't afford to lose a church,
the congregation might have a long way to go for
a service.

Whatever it is a very sad situation in a Country that
I respect.

Mike.
